Identify JD planter, 2 row

Was wondering if anyone knew what model this is. All I know is that it is a check planter, and the paddles on the shaft by the right seed bin has to do with a string tied in knots that is strung up across the field. Aparently the knoted string does somthing to plant it in a check pattern. Thanks.

The 246 Planter is a drill and hill drop planter. There is no check chain. Yours is the one of the earilest versions based on the depth adjustment bearing. To hill drop you set the "paddles" to eighter trip 2 or 3 times per rev. To drill you lock the trip lever up with a spring - I suspect this spring is missing on your planter. I have the parts and owners manual I can reproduct if you need Additional info.

The 246 was either Drill, check wire or hill drop, the 247 was cotton while the 246 was corn, don't know how the 247 was set but I have the book for them 246 & 247 were in same book and I think just different seed hoppers

Leroy: Your right, Deere did not do a good job of specifing exactly what one had. I do wonder if there may have been two prints on that manual as the manual I had made no mention of check wire. My planter would have been new around 68-70. My manual did mention hilldrop and cotton.

Coming from Canada, I did not know a whole lot about Cotton. I do remember reading the manual enough, something told me my planter was 247. I can't remember that specific item today, however I am satisfied it was 247.

The one we had was a very early planter and we did not have the check wire but I believe it was an option, The book I have now is a later book and I don't believe it is mentioned in it either, check wire was 99% gone in my area when the 246 came out. The 246 the seed boxes would be identical to the 290, 490 and 494 boxes. Just checked and my book was printed in Dec. of 53 and the 246 is corn only while the 247 is both corn and cotton and with a book it is very easy to tell the difference between the two models of planter. Here in Ohio cotton is not raised either but there have been over the years 246's advertised as 247's by people that did not know the difference

MD nut: John Deere 246/247, close to same planter except your is 247 with hill drop. Slightly different from check row. Hill drop drops 3 seeds each at each selected spacing. Ckeck row uses wire to line plants both ways, for cultivating both ways.

I had a 247 complete with manual, and near as I could tell hill drop was for planting cotton. How one of these planters ever made it to Canada, equipped for cotton is beyond me. A neighbor bought it new from Deere.

Thanks Hugh. How did the wire check plant, I can"t figure it out. I"d like to try it. My dad wasn"t quite sure how it worked. He"s had that planter since before I was born. It"s hard to see, but the paddles are on the same shaft as the gears for the planting plates. And tied to those paddles is a linkage that goes to both seed chutes. You say our planter is a hill drop? I thought it was a check planter. Thanks.

On the first pass the length of the field, you unroll the wire as you go. Loose end is staked, another stake attached at the far end of the field. After you turn, you slip the wire into a Y-shaped device on the planter, and a knot every 40 inches will trip the device, operating the seed mechanism in each box. Hill drop was used for planting corn, usually a lever to set for 2-3-4 kernels per hill. Other setting was drill- ie, random spacing.Each end of the field, you pulled a trip rope to release the wire, made the turn, then stopped to move the stake and reattach the wire. Planter rolled up the wire after the field was done.
