Wisconsin 4 cylinder on JD 224 Baler

I picked up this baler with a Wisconsin engine. It has a mag and I don't seem to be getting a spark when I turn it over. I have been using a 12 volt battery to try and start it.

Anyone have any idea's on what to check first.

At wisconismotors.com under your engine model and accessories section you can download manuals for the mags, starter, generator, distributor. You can also download some of the engine manuals. JD had operators manuals for the engines also. Don't find what you need let me know as have FM and Wico mag info and parts. The other pic below is of a Wico A mag NOT used on Wisconin V4 engines. You probably have a Wico XH1343 or FM J or X mag on it.

The mag picture I posted is an old Wico mag off a Standardtwin garden tractor. The magnets are dead
and the model number is A 32. Hal

I used a pump that was hard to start and wouldn't rev up. The points were like new but just needed a little filing and the engine ran great. The pump had been sitting for a while. I discovered this after cleaning the carb and doing a bunch of other trouble shooting. The engine was a VG4D Wisconson. Dave

Hi..worked on MANY of those!!!!! Replace the points and condensor in the mag. If there is any doubt about the plug wires, replace them too. New plugs won't hurt either..
But start with the points and condensor and blow the dust and cobwebs out of the mags. Does it have a kill button on the mag? Or a push/pull switch? Make sure the switch or switch wire is not shorted. You sure it has a mag, and not a distributor? just some starting spots.

Thanks John,

I guess I think it is a mag because it has a kill button which I think just grounds out the ignition when you push it.

I have never worked on a mag before and this one is behind the oil filter so it looks like you need to take the filter off to get the mag off. Is this correct?

If you have battery start on that engine you could convert the mag to a distributor. Very easy to do. Hal

Should be able to repalce the points and cond. without removing the mags.As El Toro mentioned, be sure to mark everything before removing the Mag, and which wire goes to which cap hole.

OK One more stupid question. Where are the points & condenser located? Also the coil if there is one.

Last question where would I find a manual on one of these?

There should be a cover over the coil secured with 4 machine screws. The coil wire should be
connected to the cover and that coil wire is connected to the distributor cap too. Your plug wires are connected to the distributor cap too.
Don't get the cap cross wired by removing wires
and not knowing where they were removed. Mark all wires and make a sketch where they were installed. Hal

If you need to remove the mag make sure you make a sketch of where the rotor is pointing. Don't move the engine once the mag is off. This is so
you can reinstall the mag and it will be in time.
You place the rotor in the same position as your sketch and it should be back in time.

I wouldn't pull it unless you need to. Take a piece of 320 wet or dry and clean the points until shiny. Then take a cotton swab dipped in alcohol and clean the points several times. I would replace the points if they are pitted. Hal
PS: If there's no fire or very weak fire after doing the above, you could have a weak coil or the mag's magnets may have lost their magnetism.
The magnets creates the hot spark when they pass by the coil. Its very easy to check the magnets
by placing a flatblade screwdriver on them. The magnets should attract that screwdriver with some effort. Here's a picture of a mag with the magnets exposed and they don't have any magnetism.
You would need to remove the coil to access the magnets.

I agree with everything except the 320 wet-or-dry. Use fine FLINT paper. The reason is anything other than flint paper will embed fine particles which will then cause more burning and pitting. You can get fine flint paper at any hardware store - it is the first and cheapest "sand"paper made. Blow out the dust when you're done cleaning up the points.
