I just brought home what I believe is a Ferguson SK-20 cultivator. I know this is identical to the Dearborn 13-2.

Most of the points are worn down to where they're only about 5 inches long. Some only have one hole left to mount them to the springs. I found some points today at TSC that I believe will work. $4.90 each. Anyone have any experience with these?

Also, is it still possible to get new springs or stems and shanks? A few of the inner springs are worn down past the holes for the plow bolts (probably due to points that were way to short) I only have 7 stems (Counting the center one), and I believe there were supposed to be 11 when new.

At one point someone welded the sleeve /seal / hub assembly to the guide disc and filled in the grease fitting, too. (gee, why didn't ol' Harry think of that when he designed it? So much simpler!) Are these parts available anywhere?

I'm kinda new at all this - what is the purpose of the sweeps vs. the points?

SWMBO hasn't given me the green light to spend much money on this yet, and it works okay as it is for what I'm using it for. I'm hoping to be able to restore it a little at a time. I also hate getting laughed at when I walk into an implement dealer and ask for some old, obsolete part that *everyone* knows is no longer available.

Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance for any help!

Joe---if you want to use NOS stems, points, springs, disregard my post.

If you want functional, good quality points, stems, springs, etc. at reasonable pricing, Fred Cain Equipment Co. manufactures a cultivator that is almost identical looking to the SK O 20.

The parts fit onto your cultivator w/o any problems.

The Springs are a single spring instead of the original double spring, but are made from thicker stock.

You should be able to google this Company and ask them for the dealer nearest to you. If you need more info on this just post back. I can give you the name and # of the dealer for WI and MN.

I have an SK-O-20. Tim

As if the original post wasn't long enough!

I think I saw something once about a planter that could be mounted on this unit. Anyone know anything about this?

Thanks,
Joe

That was a fertilizer side dressing unit you are refering to. And the Ferguson and Dearborn units are not identical tho they look that way, the front and rear angle irons are 1/4" difference apart so the shank mounts will not interchange. The shanks that the springs mohnt to are 1/4" different in length as well but they will interchange. The Ferguson only came with a guide fin while the Dearborn had the rolling coulter. They came with 11 shanks for 5 between the rows and 3 on the outside of each row. The springs if wore like that will not hold a shovel on and you could not set the tilt of the shovels as the bottom bolt holds the shovel to the spring while the top one with the use of a spacer controls the tilt of the shovel. That 11 shanks were for a 40" row spacing and if you are trying to cultivate a 30" row you may have to go down to 3 shanks between the rows and 2 on the outside of each row for 7 shanks. There are different types of shovels that fit, any that are designed for row crop cultivating will fit, for a field cultivator will not fit. Sounds like if you could find all the parts you would have a $1,000 in new parts to get it to work. As for finding any parts that might be avaible look back on this board for posts about Ford, Dearborn, Ferguson plowa and/or cultivators till you find a reply from Scott and click on his send email. Those cultivators can be set up in dozens of configurations depending on what you want to do with them including use as a field cultivator. I have one of each Dearborn and Ferguson.
