KYhayman, when is the earliest date to make hay

Just wondering. With these hot 80+ degree days and the grass in milk stage, I'm getting itchy to start. What is your experience and when do you start serious haymaking? I'd like to hear the good and bad of haying early. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

PS: I'm trying to make dry, mold free, squares for horses.

Hey Edd, I cut 22 acres of orchard grass today. It is in fair shape, but could have waited another week or two if it had to. I see there is rain in southern Ky now. We could use a shower here, that is why I cut hay today, I figured that would bring in a little. I think I will keep on rolling now that I have started. The Super C clips right along with the 100 balance head mower. I also use a JD moco but am waiting for that new 180 dollar cycle for it. They didn't have it in stock, said they hadn't sold one since the last one I bought. Most folks here use disc mowers. I don't like them, throw to much stuff at me and make the tractor run a little hotter too.

Best weather source I"ve found is NOAA, been burnt by many other"s but done all right with NOAA....knock on wood...I tried some hay this time last year and it didn"t work out to well...hard to get dry, good luck,

The trouble with hay this early in this part of the country is humidity and rain. As a good rule if the hay is blooming it is a good time to cut it. The weather does not always agree. If you have a limited amount of hay, you might want to make sure you will have a good dry spell before cutting. Usually from the middle of May or early June That being said you can not rely on the weather man. If I listened to him I would never get any hay cut. It also depends on type of hay and how it is maturing. As long as it is dry and rattles good when bending it should keep well and not mold. Mold problems are more likely in clover or alfalfa than grass hay as it takes longer for it to cure properly. I am not the KYhayman, but I have put up lots of hay in Ky. I bale hay for local horse people. There seems to be a growing demand for hay of any kind here. If it is dry and has string around it I can sell it. Last year I sold 23000 bales. We bale from now until November. The fescue hay is good quality after a frost or two in the fall. This causes sugar contents to rise and increases the protein levels.

Edd,

I too am eager to hear KYhayman's wisdom. I actually baled a very small field today. It's only about an acre, but I wanted to test my equipment before I began on the 20 acre field that I use regularly. What I did today is all fescue. I cut it Tuesday, tedded it Wednesday, and raked and baled it today. It was very fine grass so it dried thoroughly and made nice hay, but I don't know enough to know if I'm going to have a problem with it down the road.

I'm located in Middle Tennessee about 30 miles south of Nashville.

Let's see what hayman says.
