IH #16 Sickle?

Some background here and a couple questions to follow...

As near as I can tell, I have #16 rear-mount sickle mower. The sickle sections are in pretty rough shape, the guards (?) are probably marginal as well. The bar is 7' long, has 28 sickle sections (3" each).

I will be cutting a (mostly) grass pasture; some weeds, some clover.

What type of sickle section do I need -

- Over-serrated, Under-serrated, Smooth?

- Should the wear surface on the sickle guards be matched to the sickle section type?

- Do the hold-down clips adequately hold the sickle bar down, or do I need to adjust (i.e. big hammer) the sickle guards down? If yes, what is the best way to set that spacing?

Thanks for the input,

Nathaniel

Lots of folks like the over serrated best, but I prefer the under serrated becauce they sharpen better with a grinder. It will be expensive, but I would put all new gaurds on it. They will have new ledger plates in them. Combine gaurds also work well if you don't have to many rocks. There is a gauge to use in adjusting the gaurds with the hammer. I also adjust the hold downs that way too. The older style are cast and will not stand to much hammering. The one in the picture is worn out, so you might consider new ones as well. These work very well when in good condition. If you where referring to the top of gaurd they can be adjusted some with the big hammer too. I think you can get a manual for it here on YT or Binder Books. I have several of these old mowers and they work as well as any new one if in good shape.

Thanks, George.

What is the difference between a "Combine Guard" and a sickle (or swather?) guard?

Nathaniel

The combine gaurds are double gaurds with no ledger plate in them. They are not as heavy as the plain rock gaurds like is on your mower. They do a good job as long as there is no rocks to hit with them. They bend pretty easy. They are a little cheaper than the rock gaurds as well. I think that new, New Holland mowers come from factory with combine gaurds on them. Gaurds and knive, rivets and such are available at TSC. Sometimes they have new cycle's there as well. The hold downs may have to come from IH, I don't know for sure. Call Brad at 1888-824-0544 and he can get parts for your mower. Some parts such as the belt pulley,s are not available, so take care of the ones you have. Bearings and belts are.

I used a IH mower similuar to that one for a few years. First, I would put the blade in and run the mower to see if the drive parts are ok. The pitman rod looks about to rot out according to the pic.
The hold down clip pictured is completly worn out. The wear plate it is on looks ok, oddly enough. To see if new hold down clips are adjusted, see if the blade with new teeth slips under them. Be careful about hammering them. If too close, put washers under the bolts until the clips wear down, but I never had to do this. Like the other post said, you need new guards. I replaced ledger plates on a few guards once, but decided it was not cost effective.
