Flange bearings on a JD 1209 MOCO

Hello, I'm changing flange bearings in my mower/conditioner and those things are a bear to get off. Do any of you all have any suggestions? The only way I know is with a torch, but I hate doing it that way.

I see I'm in good company with the torch. :)

I spend about 5 minutes with a hammer, chisel, prybar. Then roll the torch over & get it over with. Seems 4 get the torch for every one that slips off like 'supposed' to.

on ih 990"s years ago the bearings were held in place with a collar that twisted onto the inner race of the bearing and that collar was held in place with a hex set screw. may be two screws sometimes. have you got the locking collar type on yours?

ALWAYS keep the torch parallel to the shaft- never direct it to the shaft. Don't hit the torch lever until the target metal is bubbling. Lower the Oxy valve if you're worried about burning the shaft- when getting close, let up on the lever, let the torch head bubble the last bit of bearing away from the shaft. That miniscule bit of space between the shaft and bearing will stop the cut. Minor scrapes are ok- I've done hundreds of bearing cutoffs and never ruined a shaft. Just don't get wild with the oxy lever.

No reason to hate using a torch. It's the best way I've found. A little practice and you won't even nick the shaft.
