IHC 440 baler

I have an IHC 440 baler, bought at auction cheap($200, now I know why). Looked good and worked well for about 300 bales.... then. Maybe the rust wore off or something, but I can't get it to knot. I've always had old JD's and could get them to behave but this ones' a mystery! There doesn't seem to be any adjustment on the knotter. Can anyone help or explain this. The dealer has not been any help. I can get another junker that does have the adjusters on it for $150. Is that a good idea?

Tom, twine(9000)- I'll have to get the s.# George, as I recall, the twine would get cut, but when the next bale starts to form, the twine pulls out of the holder. Thank you all for your help!

Hey George! thanks. I'm pretty sure thwere are 2 tpyes of knotters on these things. My cousins' machine has adjusters like you discribe, mine doesn't have any screws to adjust the pressure on the twine holders. I did get a manuel from the dealer but I don't think he got me the right one, it's more of a parts book with little information. And your right too, when this thing worked, it ran great.

My 440 manual only shows the all twine knotter and the wire twisters. It could have old style knotters which are like New Holland knotters. I also think that IH came out with a different knotter on the 435 and 445 balers. Maybe you have those, if so I know nothing about them. If it is the older style there is an adjustment on them.On the right side of each knotter is 2 little flat springs that stick down in the knotter. It will have a lock nut on the bolt that holds it. That is the twine holder. Loosen the nut and tighten the bolt a little on each knotter and try it again. Again I am not sure what knotter you may have. Look and see if you see the twine holder I am talking about.

You can adjust tension on the keeper arm to put more tension on the twine disc. The adjusting bolt is right above the twine disc with a spring on it. Tighten it about a 1/4 turn at a time and try it until it improves. You really need that manual so you can look at the pictures and read all the vital info in it. These are hay baling machines when properly adjusted. They flat eat hay.

I can't help you because I have not had any problems with the knoters on my baler. When I bought mine I had to put all new bearings on the plunger and realign it but since then it has just baled hay.I own 2 of them and they both work good. Bud

I will assume it has all twine knotters on it. If so when it misses one bale you have to cut the knot off the bill hook. It does not have stripper arms like the older McCormick Deering knotters used on older and other makes of balers. They are adjustable. One of the most common problems is the twine knives get dull and will not cut the twine off after knot has been tied. These are available from IH. They are little razor blades. Be very careful when fooling around with these knotters. I have the manual somewhere, but can not find it at this moment. As Tom said we need to know which knotters are on the baler. You need to get a manual for this and all equipment you use. It makes field adjustments a lot easier. Manuals are available for it right here on YT,IH or Binder Books.
