Put my scratchers on for my first plowing yesterday and broke one of the side shields off. I am using my Dad's old Super A and he had wired it on the spring. I am wondering if you can weld to this or will it weaken it and break.

A friend of mine had a set of scratchers. He had a John Deere MT with 2 row cultivators that just scratched around. We accused him of tying 2 roosters to his tractor to plow tobacco with. Was no comparison to a Super C with cultivators on it.

Don't know if that's what they are called or what. I have seen other folks use them though. Usually they have three plows mounted in a frame with spring steel. There are side shields to keep the dirt from covering up those small plants when they first come up. I usually use them the first time I plow after planting.

We always refered to them as fenders. I don't know if that is the right term or not. I took all of mine off and never use them, they are more trouble than they are worth. My philosophy is if you don't cover up a plant every once in a while you are not doing a good job covering weeds. I did put a set of rolling fenders on mine and they worked fairly well. I eventually took those off as well. If you can post a picture I may have a good piece for it.
