Some how I missed the part about the long bolt. In that case one chain is all you have.

There should be two chains. One to lift the cycle and one to stabilize the mower. The one on the lift mechanism hooks to the bottom of cylinder and the other hooks in a bracket on the lifts rockshaft.

On the pitman type adjust the trip link eye that goes into the frame that holds the cutter bar till you have 1 - 1.5 inches lead on outer end of bar. Don't remember if some of the balance head mowers had an adustment. Have manual somewhere.

Most of the problem is in the fast hitch itself. They are old and tend to run sideways when mower is in hay. Some of the pitman mowers have a bracket that attaches to the axle of tractor that will help this. The balance head mower has a chain to hook back to the tractor to help with this. Other than that there is no adjustment on the balance head mower. The pipe arm on the C-24-P and C-21-P mower can also be sprung back to adjust this.

Which mower do you have? The older pitman mower, or a 100 balance head mower. Also which tractor are you using it on?

Are you refering to a sickle mower?

If so,what do you mean by lead? Angle of the guards?

Gary
