IH 1PR Corn Picker

I picked up a excellent IH 1PR picker at an auction last night for $400. It was kept under roof its whole life and has decent paint and all the original decals. It was very well maintained. Anybody out there use one of these, how do they compair to others? Let me know your opinions. The last couple years I have used an old worn-out IH 14P that has sat outside at our farm for the last 30 years, It worked but it shelled more than it should and boy, was it slow!

Corn varieties nowdays have softer cobs and shell more. You might try to find a variety that has a harder cob. Maybe one they use for making the hybrids.

I had two 1PR's in the past. I think they are good pickers. I had very little trouble with either of them. I have seen pickers that husk cleaner, but both of mine were old and about worn out. They, too, will shell a little corn. Especially if you try to pick real dry corn. I had a 323 NI after the IH pickers. I think I really liked the IH's better. I'm presently using a JD 300 with a 244 corn head. Now, that's a picker that will keep shelling losses to a minimum because it uses deck plates. But, if I had to use a 1PR again, it would not make me real unhappy.

I have a JD 300 and the only good thing about it is that 244 head. If it was on a New Idea picker you would have something there.

George, I tend to agree somewhat on the JD 300. I think mine could definetly husk better than it does. Mechanically, I haven't had much problems with it. It is a heavy thing to pull though.

Mine was a dependable machine, but is to slow. That blower shroud on the back stayed clogged up in heavy dry fodder. If you puuled it back so the chaffe could blow on out it put it in the wagon. They do have a real head though. My New Idea will pick circles around it. In wet or dry fodder.

I meant to say in heavy wet fodder. It works fairly well in the afternoon after the fodder dries out.
