Spreader question

saw a ad in the paper for a manure spreader for sale, guy said the brand was a Colby, anybody ever heard of that? he said it was PTO driven, rubber tires, metal floor and sides. Said he was using it and then the chain stopped working, PTO turns but the chain doesn't move at all. only wants 100 for it, just wondering what that could be and if it would be worth it before i drive an hour to look at it. any ideas?

That spreader might be built by a different maker with just the Cobey name on it. I have an old Massey-Ferguson that was made by someone else.

Mine suddenly quit working, and I was scared that I had chewed up the gear box. But I could move the beaters and the gear box was quiet and both the floor chain and the beaters were in sync thru the gearbox. Next I took the lid off the gear box...not an easy task on my unit, and the inside ot the gear box was like new. Couldn't figure it out. Turns out there is a coupler between the long drive shaft that goes down the side of the spreader, and the gear box. It was hidden under a protective shield that took about an hour to remove. Thats where I found the problem. The shaft would turn but the coupler was loose and the half moon key had chewed out the keyway in the end of the shaft that goes into the gear box.

Local welder built up the end of the shaft without pulling the gear box apart. Cost $100 to fix it. Been working great for a year now.

I thought Cobey was manufactured in Ohio. They did a lot of advertising in the Ohio Farmer. Do know that silage wagons were their speciality, although they did make manure equipment. Obviously no longer in business.

Go look it over real good. Could be something very simple to fix but on the other hand it could end up being a money pit. But for $100 you could probably make that much back just as scrap iron, ot turn it into a wagon of some sort

Hi, I believe you mean Cobey. They were popular
in Mn. Don't know though whatever happened to the
company. Probably a half moon key sheared in the

I've heard of Colby, but I don't know if they ever made a manure spreader. We've got a running gear made by Colby. Pulls straight even though the tounge is loose as a cheerleader. Could be as simple as a shear bolt, or as bad as a junk gear box. Could be a busted drive chain too, or a whole other mess of possibilities.
