If i were wanting a manure spreader that i could pull w/ a 4000 ford w/ single hydraulics and a 540PTO that I could unload into a pile, what models should i be looking for? Will any of the PTO drive units run the apron chain while sitting still?

To expand on the story a bit, my neighbor has sheep, my wife gardens. So i get to haul sheep poo from the neighbors down to our house to stockpile for use in the gardens. Loading goes great, i take the 4000, and fill my barge box wagon up. Unloading, not so good. I hate to raise the hoist up too far w/ all of that stuff in there for fear of just shoving the hoist through the bottom of the wagon, or tipping the whole unit over, so i lift a little then start in w/ the pitch fork. I got 2 loads last night and was done by 10. I was always told s__t runs down hill, after that project, i'm not so sure.

Gary, you know of anyone in the area w/ something that might work sitting in the fencerows that I could beg borrow, buy or steal?

I'm in a little late tonite, but it looks like others gave some goocd ideas.

Any pto spreader will unload sitting still but you would need to remove the beaters or let the beaters spread it out a bit by leaving them on.

I am on my 6th spreader, the second that is PTO operated. This last one is a New Holland 518 with a roller chain. It beats those square (#67) links, hands down. I have been spreading some year old horse manure/bedding on my pastures. The loads are really dense and heavy. Had I been using my NH475, I would have been unloading by hand and replacing broken links! I pull my 518 with a MF165 diesel with no problems.

If you have a loader on your 4000 and a flat bed trailer, just load the trailer and use the loader to pull/slide the manure off at your place. If the neighbor is close enough and you have a loader, why not just haul it a bucket full at the time and forego the spreader?

I like driving the tractor enough, but 1 1/2 mile 1 way is a little far to haul a bucket full at a time.

I'll keep an eye out on the auction market, and see what i can come up with, but likely i'll just end up shoveling it off of the barge box for this year.

All pto run spreaders can run the apron standing still. Rebuilding unit right now for dealer putting complete new floor in the unit. If you are going to do want you want to do then you will have to remove the rear beaters or it will jam up there or just let it throw it into a larger pile just use normally and sit still

john deere model n will not unload into a pile.
you have to be going ahead as apron is ground driven. pto drives the beaters and wide spread.

thanks,

the first, last and only spreader i've ever had a part of is the old M-D that dad has...I think it's a model 10, but can't be sure. Makes a nice mate to the 8N Ford, but at a loader bucket per load, it takes a long time to acomplish much.

Is there any models that had perpetual problems i should shy away from? someone mentioned some of the New Idea units had a weaker apron drive system.
