I am thinking of buying a new manure spreader. I have 7 cattle and 2 donkeys, so most of the manure is pretty wet and heavy. Would I be better off buying one which is PTO driven as opposed to ground driven. I used a large one this past winter (New Idea-PTO driven-much larger than I needed) and it worked well. I may not have access to it again and am thinking of buying a new one, although I am aghast at the expense. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I think the most important factor is type of beater bar more than the type of drive. I've used both with good results. Most older ground deiven are better for dryer manure. Had a PTO drive that had those loose "hammers" that hinged on the shaft...couldn't spread dry for nuthin'! Worked good, even great for the wet heavy stuff. If you aren't spreading every day, I would go with whatever gives you the best spread for what you have. If it has an end gate it is designed for the wet/slurry type of manure you get from the confinement barn If you pile the stuff for a while then spread (which with those few animals I think you would have to ) I would look for either an old ground drive that is made for that type of manure, or at least one with a similar type of beater bar. PTO is much much superior to ground drive. In wet weather you can off-load it in a pile somewhere without driving across a muddy field. You can empty it with a low tire, or in the dark, or switch from heavy coverage to light. Lots of advantages to PTO drive. However, they are more expensive...and usually much newer. PTO spreaders go for a lot around here. I paid $1000 for mine and wouldn't take $2000 for it.

By the way, a pile of out of the way muck, turns into a pile of beautiful black soil in about a year..or even less time if you can stir it up and roll it over occassionaly.

Watch your local auctions. I got my spreader for a wopping big $5 and all it needed was the tires aired up, there bad but work for what it does. Its a PTO drive type, it also need the chains lubed and 2 or 3 new cross bars but for $5 it was well worth it. Plus it had 9 sheets of roof metal in it and a couple of 1/2 ich cables. I've seen a good many of them sell at auctions for under $500 which is a lot less then what one sells for new

Toss an end gate and new paint on that one and it'd be a perfect match for my NI 217
