Has anyone ever updated the idler sprocket for the reel chain with the white plastic idler wheel? I was told to do this by my dealer when I replaced the chain. The parts book says it takes the same 5/8" carriage bolt used to hold the idler sprocket, however, when I tried to install it, it appears the plastic idler takes a smaller bolt. At least the one I have does. Are you supposed to use a smaller bolt or drill out the plastic idler? Would I be better off just leaving the original idler sprocket on?

The original bolt is 5/8" and the hole in the plastic idler is probably 1/2". I can't use a bushing because the hole the bolt goes through is made for the square neck on the carriage bolt to fit snug, and it's made so the bolt can slide up and down to loosen or tighten the idler as the chain wears. That was what I did't understand. You can't use a smaller bolt and have it fit correctly. It would definately be a chore to screw the plastic idler onto that big bolt!!

Actually, I got to thinking. That plastic bushing doesnt turn, has to e real tight. I think it just screws onto that bolt. Takes a while and is hard on the hands.

I've had two of them. On my older one it had the sproket, my newer on (1982/3) had the plastic bushing. Seems the chain lasts a lot longer with the plastic bushing. As to the bolt, that I dont know but Id definitely update. Just sold it two weeks ago, didnt think I did too bad, $2000, cash.

I would find a bushing that will fit the original hole and use the bolt size for the plastic idler. If there is very little difference in the size (say for example orginal is 5/16" and new is 1/4") I suppose you can just drill out the plastic sproket bolt hole...
