Straw is really scarce around here, and shavings are getting that way too, so.. . There is alot of hay ground being offered up ,just to keep the fields clean.Farms are retired, and cow/calf guys that used to take this grass are gone. I am thinking that my Claas Rotocut Baler would make some decent chopped material for bedding. Am I way off base ? If it's net wrapped and tarped, it can be feed or bedding. My cost is fuel and time. Straw is $2.00/, and shavings are about $850.00/ 48' trailer load,if you can get it.

Just don't bale a bunch of weeds that have gone to seed or you'll be spread weeds all over your place.

Have a friend that shredded old news paper to bed down his cows and heifers. He had a Briggs and Straton powered shredder that was wheeled into location. He went to the local recycling site and got the paper for free.

When we ran low on straw for bedding we used shredded corn fodder. We never had a corn picker
and the corn was shucked by hand and the fodder
was put in big corn shocks. The cows and young stock seem to like it. They even ate some of it.

That has changed over the years since the use of
machinery to pick, shell and grind the stalks. Then the residue is disked into the ground. At one time the saw mills had a problem disposing of the sawdust, now it is scarce and expensive. Hal

Sawdust(green)is scarce around here, $900 for 45' trailer load to the pellet mill. Straw and shavings, what's that? I bale up old fields for bedding, the ones that the owners are paying to have someone mow off once a year. I run the round bales through a processor. My neighbor just bought a Krone bale pack round baler with the knives to do his bedding. After he bought some roto cut bales and liked what he saw. When my round baler gets tired I will likely do the same thing, as sawdust and other bedding is going to be scarce for a while. We bed dairy cows with it and have no trouble.
