I am pretty sure I am right, but can somone settle me and my cousins argument? He thinks that 1000 and 540 RPM PTOs turn at the same speed, because you can switch the PTO on his Allis Chalmers 7030 around to give either one. but when he put an adapter on the 1000 to make it a 540 to run his IH planter, he had to run at almost stall out speed to get the right spacing. Am I right or is eh right?

Mike, ask him if'n he hooks up a 540 hay tedder to the 1000 side... then why does it sound like a helicopter taking off? Also, why did it throw the gear box over to the neighbors farm?

P.S. This is not a safe practice, do not try this at home. We use highly trained idiots to try and duplicate these scenerios in a controled test environment. Your mileage may vary...

reminds me of what my uncle did along time ago. don't remember what the tractor was, but it wasn't his , but I know it was his old IH baler. He put a 120 HP tractor on it with a 1000 to 540 adapter so he could run it. He found out real quick that driveshafts, universals, and a new knotter are REAL expensive. He decided that IH had always been good to him so he would fix it and keep using it.

Wow, the man needs some help. 540 RPM (thats revolutions per minute) vs 1,000 RPM's. If he looks at his 7030 he will see that when he flips the shaft he is putting the bolts in an entirely different set of holes. One set is spinning at 540, the other at 1,000. 1,000 RPM pto spins almost twice as fast as 540 RPM.
