Hi All , I went to two plow days this past weekend . I met David Kronwell ( hope I spelled the name right ) Real nice fellow ! I'm not much for details on the number of tractors and types but there were plenty there . I was to busy having a good time to count ! My wife took pictures but since we still use that ancient form of real photograghy with real celluloid it'll be a while till I can get them posted . I was offered the use of a SM-TA but I declined . It was a very nice looking and running tractor and I didn't want to mess up the TA . Me and my BIL fiddled all day with trying to get my plow set right but we failed . It worked OK but not as good as it should have , it didn't work good at all the second day on a old established alfalfa field . That day it was very hard pulling all day and the back of the plow was at least 5" off track . I think we need to move the hitch bar one hole to the left because the plow tails into the furrow wall . If I understand it right this means the front bottom is taking to big of a bite so I need to move the plow to the right on the hitch and/or move the furrow wheel in some . The wheel is right were the manual calls for it to be so I'm leaning towards the plow moving .

On the first day I could pull it easy in the sod at around 4-1/2 to 5 mph in 3rd direct and overdrive with an occasional drop to underdrive where it was really wet . In the corn stubble where most of the lite soil was I was doing 4th . It covered best at 6 mph except in the real lite sandy soil where slowing to 2-1/2 mph worked best . I went to the second farm on Sunday and dropped it in the ground in 3rd over and she went ughhh !!! Great traction but couldn't get past 3rd direct all day . Only I had real troubles that day but there were only 4 tractors there including mine and the owner of the property . Still had a good time though and had more time to confuse ourselves over why the plow didn't work well . I left my manual at home on Sunday so I couldn't use the trouble shooting guide in it . All in all it was a great time ! The hog roast at Charlie Gors place on Saturday was done to perfection and it appeared as all were having a good time ! Charlie is one h3ll of a fiddle player it turns out . And it looked like Paul Backus was playing a 12 string (?) with the best of em ! Take care ! ...Randy

Randy; I'm not an expert, but I have done a fair amount of plowing, going back to the early fifties. You didn't say what size plow you were using but I'm thinking 3 bottom. First the center line of draft on 3btms will be somewhere to the right of the center beam(towards plowed ground). This is what gets your plow pulling straight. to get the front furrow width right the plow furrow wheel needs to run close to or maybe 2" from the furrow wall. To do this set the tractor wheel width so that the line of pull runs straight from the center of the tractor thru the plow. If this isn't possible then adjust with the diagonal brace on the plow tongue a little and/or preferably the swinging drawbar on the tractor. The tractor will counter some side draft, but keep the plow pulling as straight as possible. Hope thes helps. Five bottoms behind an 806 have been some of my best days. Good luck, LE.

Hi Larry , Like Leroy said it's a semi-mount 4-16 , a 565 Oliver pulled by a Oliver 1755D . I have a couple of different manuals on it but they make it sound so simple but in the soil it's not so clear to me . Like getting the measurement under the rear landside or getting the rolling colters set right which I can't do till I get the thing trailing right . Unless theres another plow day put on by someone this spring it may have to wait till this fall . I haven't been sure if the rule about 1/4 of the cut to the left of center of the total plows cut held true for semi-mount plows . If so then that part of the plow is set up right but I'll need to move the hitch bar over to the left to reduce the cut of the first bottom . That might make it trail OK . Thanks for the help ! Take care ...Randy

Randy's plow is a 4-16" semi mount. I am thinking he has a leveling problem. Good luck Randy, Did you get those IHC plows?

Hi Leroy , How are things at home ? We leveled the plow front to back and side to side . I think what we need to do is move the hitch on the plow to the left to reduce the cut of the first bottom . If that doesn't solve it then I guess I'll have to move the right wheel in some .

I haven't gotten those plows yet nor have I picked up that 555H I bought . It seems as though I've become a plow collector without me even knowing it ! ;) As soon as I pick up those 4 plows I'll be the proud owner of 5 plows . 1 oliver semi -mount 4-16 , 1 JD 555H 3-14 , 2 Little genius #8 2-14's , and 1 three bottom that I'm not sure of since I haven't seen the IHC plows yet . One of them is supposed to be a clutch lift and one is supposed to have trip bottoms . I'm going to look at them next week sometime . I'm heading up to the twin cities to the horse fair this weekend . Take care ! ...Randy
