Hi all,

I was getting my 290 ready to plant some corn this weekend and had bought some plastic seed plates to put in the thing. Well, they wouldn"t snap into the hopper. I measured them againt the old metal ones and they were a little thicker.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Is this something a belt sander can fix?

Thanks,
Brad

Seems like I recall years ago (40 yrs ago) that with JD 290 & 490 you could take floor plate and flip it over to take care of your problem. One side had a "groove"; some planter plates needed floor plate to be groove up and some needed groove down. DO NOT grind the plate to make it thinner, you will just create more problems.

A variety of floor plates were available depending on which seed plates were being used. Most of the "regular" plates (corn, beans, etc) used a flat floor but some of the thinner ones required either a separate filler plate or a floor plate with a raised center section. It is possible that your planter has one of these special floor plates. There should be a number cast into it that would say for sure. Also, what number is on the old plates that you removed? That would also indicate which floor plate you have.

I have 10-12 sets of plastic plates and never had a problem.Used a 290 for years,up till this year.Lost one of those retaining springs on the bottom of the seedbox one time.Maybe check and see if it's snapped in on both sides. It's that little half moon shaped spring under the lid on the bottom.
