They are good machines. We"ve three Hestons. I"ve written a bit about the 1014 here in the recent past. You might look for it in the Archives. Enjoy!

I figured I'd post a picture of it in action too- We're cutting 1st crop in this picture. It really is a nice machine.

We just got a 1014+2 last year for $600 in need of all new cutting parts. We spent another $600 on that, and we replaced all the guards, clips, and both sickles. We got them from sickleservice.com-

It works really nice. The crimper is a little narrow for the size of the machine, but so far dry-down hasn't been an issue with it. We run it with either a MAssey 285 or an Oliver 1855. The massey was in need of an overhaul so it putn out somewhere around 75HP. The biggest thing is you're gonna need a little extra weight to keep from being pushed around corners or you're just gonna have to slow down a little bit more. The first cut of the season takes a couple rounds to shine up the auger and everything else so material flows smooth, but once it's shined up a little more I can run in 1st high multi-power low on the Massey and 3rd gear direct/under on the 1855 w/ larger 18.4-38 tires. If it had 34's on it I would probably go in 4th.

If you need any other help let me know and I'll try to help you out.

I think from your post you mean a +2 not x2. This means you have two separate 7 foot knives driven from each end. Mine is the older single knife machine. I pull it behind a JD 4010 and unless it's starting to plug, the 4010 hardly knows its there.

I got mine two years ago and used it heavily for the first time last year. Good basic machine. Like anything that old, look for wear on any moving components. Search the archives, there have been some posts on 1014's.

First year I owned it I had problems with poor feeding on the auger plugging the crimper. The advise I got here on the board was correct. Make sure the cutting components are in tip top shape before figuring out why you have any crop feeding or plugging issues. I put in all new sections the second year and it solved the slug feeding problem.

my two cents

John
