Hi all,

I have a 3-point style rotary speader with a cone shaped hopper that holds 600lbs (like the kind you see at Tractor Supply). I used it a long time ago to broadcast spread grass seed but have never used it for fertilizer. My plan is to spread 16-4-8 granular fertilizer at 250lbs/acre on a Bahia hay field. With that in mind I hope someone can help answer the following questions:

1. Its been very dry here in Central Florida. Will it hurt the Bahia grass to spread the fertilizer if we are not going to get rain in the next two weeks?

2. Will it ruin the fertilizer if left to sit in the plastic 50lb bags if I have to wait for rain? I don"t know if it will sweat in the bag and ruin it or make it clump.

3. What PTO RPM speed should I run at to get the greatest broadcast?

4. Should I make multiple "cross-hatch" passes to get an even distribution?

5. Its been very windy here lately. Do I need to wait for the wind speed to drop to use this type of spreader? If so then what is the maximum wind speed that won"t adversely affect the broadcast?

I kindly appreciate your help...

I doubt you will burn your grass 250 lbs. is only going to give you 40LB. actual N. I would wait until just before a rain to spread so the nitrogen will be washed into the root zone. You can lose alot of N when it just sits on top of the ground. Keep your fertilizer dry, it will be okay. If you don't get a nice even spread pattern, it's too windy.

1 yes it will burn grass

2 keep it in a shed or under a tarp on pallets

3 if your spreader is rated for 540 then run it at 540

4 crosshatch is good if you have time and can afford fuel

5 15-20 mph wind shouldnt cause distribution probs but wear a mask because dust will be flying.

all the above works for me in Texas on bahia.
