This might be the wrong place to post this but I thought I would start here. I want to plant pumpkins with my 4 acres sweetcorn, but only a row or two of pumpkins. Anyone ever done this? ...if so any recommendations on where to plant such as should they planted on the outer rows for sunlight or does that matter?....how far apart..etc.

we useta plant em together in the kitchen garden but was a RPIA in the fields...seems to me theres some old wives tail about 1 benefittin the other but i never seen anything to make it worth while.

Grandad said they used to put the pumpkin seeds in the fertilizer hoppers.Course that was in field corn in the days before they srayed.If you throw them in the seedbox of a plate planter it chews the daylights out of the seeds.We bought a Cole planter off of a friend of ours a few years ago.If your going to get serious that is the only way to go.Planting 3/4 acre by hand is NO FUN!

Using any residual herbicide or planning on spraying for broadleaf weeds? Pumpkins planted late in a RR corn field would probably be the way to go.

My dad used to plant a few hills by hand in the corn rows. Said the corn hid pumpkins from insect damage. Worked for us. Pumpkins usually started to spread afted corn cultivating was done.

I would create a seperate patch. I grow those giant pumpkins for the state fair and those vines can cover some ground if you didn't prune them right. They are two fragile to be handled so I would plant them in two patches.

its a wife (another word for them) to plant those two things together. the vines will get torn off or cut into when you lay the corn by. i'd make a seperate patch for the pumpkins. i try to plant mine on a little rise so that the ground doesn't stay damp under the pumpkins. laying them on a hand full of wheat straw seems to help keep mine from rottening in wet years. mom always said don't plant watermellons, cantalopes or pumpkins close together.

we used to plant pumpkins in field corn. pumpkin vines spread out 15-20 ft.you cannot move the vines or step on them, they are fragile and if the vine breaks it dies. sweet corn would be tough because you will walk the corn to harvest, stepping on the vines, as sweet corn will ripen way before the pumpkins.

Years ago all the farmers around here would put a few pumpkins in with the corn. I don't think it will matter where, but I am no pumpkin expert either. Good Luck.
