I purchased an AC 80R mower last year, and although it is in good shape, I was disappointed with the way it cut. With previous mowers I easily cut in 2nd gear, but I couldn't do this with the this mower. Previous experience was with an NH 451 and an old IH pitman drive. The NH was a beautiful mower until it got wrapped around a telephone pole. The IH probably was good in its day, and would cut like a dream when it worked, but spent most of its short life on this farm getting repaired.

The teeth on the AC mower are not serrated, and the ledger plates aren't either. (Actually there aren't actually ledger plates - just the guard itself acts as the ledger). After thinking about it all winter, I wonder could this be the problem? I am cutting grass hay - maybe this set up is wrong for my situation?

Any ideas?

I've had lots of experience with 80R mowers. Excellent machines. I'd recommend replacing the guards with double New Holland Haybine guards, relacing the sections (can use Ford, JD or AGCO)with bolts (nut side up), and new hold down clips. Possibly, use one set of stub guards at the heel (next to twin wheel drive). Also, put on a new drive belt if it's rounded. You'll be extremely pleased, and it will cost less that relpacing wiht new AGCO parts.

If you are using smooth sections they are going to have to be sharpened. Up here we used to do it every 4 to 5 hours in normal conditions. Thats why we now use underserrated sections with the two prong swather type guards in all our mowers.

I would pull that knife and change the sections. You can also take a grinder to the edge of the guards and just touch up the edges so they are not rounded.

I use one of the old IHC mowers with the pitman and it does need a lot of fixing. I find that the smooth sections are by far the best to use when cutting grass. I've even been known to take the knife out and sharpen them up with a hand stone. Good luck.
