I found one of these in some old brush in our back of a 1912 farm we bought. Can anyone give me any info on these?

I bought a McCormick Deering No 7 horse drawn mower last year for $100 at an auction.

The mower I bought was about 90% complete.

I also bought an operators manual/parts list for the mower on eBay.

Take a look at the photo of another mower that appears to be a complete.

Hopes this helps.

What parts do you need? I had 12 or 13 different horse mowers at one time. I still have some parts. I have one new 5ft. cycle in the wooden crate and some new swath boards complete with all iron fittings. These still have the varnish on them. Also about 8 or 9 new -never used pitmans, complete with the iron fittings on each end. Many of these parts fit Minnesota mowers but I think some also fit McCormick Deering.

The only part(s) that are missing on my mower is the piece at the front end of the yoke where the horses/mules are hooked up.

A previous owner made a pitman out of stainless steel. It will probably last my lifetime.

The swathboard/grassboard is metal. I do have a wooden grassboard for a JD No. 4 mower.

I probably will not restore this mower, but I sometimes hook it up to a tractor and mow with it just for fun.

Loren --

I would be interested to see your swathboard for McCormick-Deering mower, also pitman for the same. I am working on a Deering "New Ideal Giant" and need both pitman and swath board. E-mail is open; I tried to send you an e-mail via the link in your message, but I can never get one to go through on this computer -- firewall settings or some such nonsense.

Hope to do business with you!

I've sent you an email. Back in the 1980's I used to collect horse machinery. Didn't want the scrap man to get it all. I had about 50 pcs. at one time. Still have 2 or 3 sulky plows, 4 riding cultivators -one with mounted fertilizer canisters (if someone doesn't think this really existed, I have the original manuals for both the cultivator and attachments), 9 horse drawn hay tedders -all different, 1 three bar side delivery horse drawn rake, 2 potato diggers, several walking plows (1 with handles about 8 feet long). I was told this IHC plow came from the Ford museum. Also have several implement poles and other related items. As my wife had cancer 5 years ago, I started selling most of the collection.

Loren:

Thanks; You have mail now, too.

I know what you meant when you said that you bought up horse-drawn implements before they went for scrap; nowadays I cringe every time I see a trailer go by with old farm iron on it that is destined for the blast furnaces in China, and that will been seen in this country again only when it is imported in a different form to be sold at Wal-mart... Once this stuff is gone, there'll never be any more of it made. I'd rather see horse-drawn equipment rusting away quietly in some Yuppie's flower bed than on its way to the scrapyard.

I have an old IHC potato digger, but it's not complete; think that Grandfather scavenged some pieces-parts off it years ago. They are a neat machine to watch, though, as are the IHC hay tedders. Sure would hate to get run over by one of those tedders - you'd have more holes poked in you than a sieve!

The #7 was a horse mower made in the 30's. May I ask you identified it? The #7 has a gear box lid that looks like a ski slope. I can give you more info if this is what you have.
