How to clean the years of rust of a plow.

I have a John Deere 2 bottom plow with 14 inch mold bord plows mounted to it. I am sorry to say but the plow has not been used for about 30+ years. It was sitting in a tobocco barn with juice driping on it rusting more then if it was sitting out side. My grandfather used to keep greese and oil on it but doses not appear to have any one it. Any help would be helpfull our clay loam soil doses not like old rusted over plows.

Scuff it with a wire brush to get the flakey stuff off, then put it in the ground. Not much else you can do unless you want to get a grinder with a wire wheel & do alot of polishing.

i remember hereing of a guy that bought plow on farm sale everything was painted in ih colors even molboards. it was rusted really bad so he went down the gravel road and dropped plow in ground. it cleaned up fast and got road commissioner poed. farmer said road needed worked up anyway.

plow in a higher gear with it. What, don't tell me you plan on wasting 40 bucks of wire wheels when you can stick that thing in the ground and plow a few acres with it.

get some feed grade molasses from a feed store, either granular or liquid, and get any kind of tank that is big enough to hold your plow (an old bath tub or water trough will do, or even a kids' swimming pool. Mix water with the molasses (the mixture can vairy widely, but one gallon liquid molasses to 30 gallons water will do). Soak anything metal in it for 2-3 weeks and it comes out like new. Be ready to rinse with water and dry - it will rust again immediately if you don't dry it and prime it.

When I was a kid I saw my Dad walk over to the stone pile and pick out a few pieces of sandstone, then get down on his knees and start rubbing, it didn't take long till the three points and molboards were cleaned up. He usually greased them in the fall using an old paintbrush and a pail of grease. They cleaned up easily and you didn't need to plow very far before everything was shiny.

Sandy soil or a die grinder work pretty good. after using a plow, scrape, wire brush clean, then paint with plow coat, a tar-like grease that is good for about 2-5 years in the weather. Where to get plow coat? Tough S**t Charlie (TSC), about $5.00/gallon or John Deer dealer, if you have too much money, about $5.00/spray can.

plow some ground and it will clean itself. after that mop it down with pure linseed oil and store and in a dry area inside the barn to keep it from rusting.

I don't have trouble cleaning plow off my ground is sandy but before storing after using plow I clean & paint with rustolem any color I have on hand, the reason I do this is grease has a tendency to draw dampness & over time will rust a surface . Next year all you have to do is start
Plowing .

I remember when I was a kid on the farm, my Dad would use Naval Jelly to clean up rusty plows. We lived in East Kansas and black dirt did nothing to polish them up. It usually took a half a day of plowing before they began to shine.

The surface of the moldboard is so hard, that a flap or flexible wheel on a disk sander will take the rust off but just polish the surface. It won't grind grooves in the hard steel.

The plow will clean up in sand or sandy ground but in black dirt it won't unless you stop every few feet an scrape the dirt off. Otherwise the dirt will protect the moldboard and keep it from getting polished and that plow will pull HARD.

Been there, done that.

I would agree with Ross and have it sandblasted.
I had that done on a 16-inch IH moldboard plow. It won't take the pits out and it still plow nice.

This may sound funny but the best way to clean them up is to go and use it. Go out and plow with it and before you get 1000 yards they will shine if the soil has any sand or gravel in it if not it may take a few 1000 yards

Well, the problem is plows wear out fast enough. So a person really hates to grind metal off in any way. Tends to leave scratch marks anyhow that keep the clay sticking too.

Dad would polish the rust off with a gunny sack & wood ashes. Would give a bit of polish to the bottom, even if some rust stayed on. Yea, that takes elbow grease & is like real work, so not for everyone....

If you have any bit of sandy ground at all, that will polish it up in a hurry. I have a couple acre sand hill, Works well.

A wire brush (wheel) will do a lot too, without taking off real metal.

If you do something that is agressive to the metal, try to keep the scrapes & gouges in line with the flow of dirt.

Call me crazy or lazy I"d take it and get the moldboard sandblasted and keep it covered from now on. If you had some sandy soil and enough tractor you could plow that. But your right clay doesn"t like rusty plows and I don"t think it scours worth a darn.
