Question Regarding Sickle Bar Mowers and My 706

Ok, I am first time tractor owner, recently bought an International 706. This tractor has two different PTO shafts on the back, 540rpm and 1000rpm. We are looking into doing some light hay making using a sickle bar mower. My dad has an International 100 series sickle bar mower that he was going to give me. I have since then heard that I can't run that mower because my tractors PTO can't be run slow enough to keep from destroying the sickle bar mower. They said I may in low and in 1st gear but I would be moving like .5 mph. Is this true? Is this too much tractor for this sickle bar mower?

Also, can anyone give me a rule of thumb on this so I can make sure I get the right mower? We are really at a lost - we had originally thought all PTO's were either 540 or 1000 and now we are wondering if that is true. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I run an IH 1000 9 ft bar mower behind an 856 diesel with turbo. It runs off the 540 shaft. If you look at the tachometer, you will see a line that says something about PTO speed. On my 856, I run the engine at about 1800RPM, this gives a good sickle speed, and then you just put the tractor in the gear that the hay mows best at. In grass hay I usually run in low 3rd, this gives me a ground speed of around 3-3.5 mph. It is slow, but it is grass hay.

As long as you are hitched to the 540 shaft, and running at 1800 RPM or less, you will not overspeed the mower.

WOW, thats alot of tractor for sickle, you better hook it to the baler instead. I guess next you'll be buying a 2 bottom 14" plow for it & a 6 foot disk. Anyway, have fun with it.

A 540 rpm pto is the same on all tractors. The 540 was the industry standard adopted by ALL tractor and equipment manufacturers. The IH #100 mower you are considering was designed to the industry standards, and will work just fine behind the 706. The 706 might be a bigger tractor than what is needed, but if that is what you have, there is absolutely no reason to not use it.

If you can get clearence from the tire it will work ok. Just remember that a 706 gas uses fuel like its running out a funnel.

My Farmall H would mow most of the afternoon on 5 gal gas. My 706 would do the same work on 15 gal gas. My 400 will use about 7 or 8 gal.

That is a lot of tractor for a sickle bar, but hook it up to the 540 and it will work fine. You might have clearance issues, if the wheels are set out at all, tractor kinda wide for the mower.

almost all sickle mowers are 540. alot of disc mowers are 1000. your shaft with the large splines is the 540 shaft. ground speed or transmission gear has no effect on pto shaft speed. engine speed is the only thing that varies pto speed. 1000 rpm shafts always have small splines and 1000 rpm implements have the corresponding small splines in the yoke. im not real familiar with the ih mower but it is either equipped with a shear bolt, a slip clutch, or a wooden pitman rod. these are engineered weak points that protect other parts from being damaged. so if the mower has the appropriate parts your 706 won't be too much tractor. all pto's are either 540 or 1000, but there is always a possibility that someone has changed things around on a mower to run one shaft or the other. an example, a hay producer i know owned several kuhn disc mowers, they were all 540 mowers. he changed the yokes on the mowers so they would fit his 1000 rpm shaft. this allowed him to throttle back his tractors (JD 4430's) and save fuel

Your mower will be belt driven. It should work just fine on the 540 PTO. I have a Model 100 Balanced pull type IHC mower. They are sweet running mowers. I use mine behind a D-17 Allis, works real nice. Be sure the cycle is sharp and the guards tight, -they tend to work loose from time to time. I do have a 756 Farmall but haven"t used it for mowing yet as the D-17 is so much nicer. The 706 or 756 has 3 steps up or down so if adjustments are needed or a problem arises, it"s a long way to the ground. It also seems harder to see the mower when turning to watch the cycle bar. Ther should be a line on tachometer for running the pto at the proper or maximum engine rpms.

I had an IH 1000?,semi mount on the cross draw-
bar with a 9" cutter bar.I had to get some hitch extensions made.Be sure to get a manual for your mower. I also used it on other tractors I had. The mower was rated for 540 pto rpm. OK this mower was hitched to a 706 ger. diesel. I did not run at full pto engine speed. About 1900 rpm. I would run in 4 and low with TA up at a ground speed of 4.5 + mph. All seemed to work just fine.
