I've seen (and work) soils where that tractor would struggle to pull 1 x 16 (yes, one), ballasted. Normally, I think 2 x 16 should be OK. I've seen very few places where that tractor would take 3 16's. It's fine for power. IT just doesn't have the traction unless it's got more than standard rubber, and a lot of weight. 3 10's or 3 12's was the number for that tractor. 3 16's is a lot more plow.
Generally, you would be very very close to 20 per bottom with that plow, or at least I am in lighter soil.

Modifying the plow depends upon what model plow you have, as well as trailer, 3pt, or.... Gotta tell us what you have to know if you can drop a bottom off.

In my soils, a Ford 960 (same engine you have, 5-speed tranny) handled a 2-16 real well. It rarely could pull the 3-16. We do have tough clay soils here tho.

If that is 3 point it is often pretty easy to drop the rear bottom off & make it a 2 bottom.

Some trailer plows the rear bottom is sort of an add-on to a 2 bottom, and can be modified without too much work. Others it is a real machinest dream to re-engineer the whole plow....

I'm not familar with Case.

30 pointer: Plowing has more to do with traction than horsepower. 15 to 20 horsepower will handle most plow bottoms, question is do you have the weight or traction weight transfer to pull the plow.

It may only require 15 to 20 hp but it will most likely require 2,000# of tractor weight or weight transfer equivalent per bottom.

It all depends on your soil. Here in south eastern PA, 3-16's would probably make a 60 hp tractor grunt. Some plows can have the rear bottom removed pretty easily, and some can't, so its tough to say how hard it will be on your plow. I would think a 2 bottom would work better on your tractor, probably do a nicer job without overworking the tractor. I always thought it was a more pleasant job when the tractor pulled the plow easy.
