What is the difference between a Trail plow and a Trip plow? I posted on Identify and received reply that it is not a trip but a trail. Plow has cam on one wheel that is released by pulling a rope to drop the plows to ground then lifts back when rope is pulled again. Curt from MN

Mnobfan: I think you are getting this a bit more complicated than it needs to be First there are mounted, semi-mounted and trailer plows.

TRIPPING is another subject matter. First there are trip hitches and trip lifts and those both may or may not be an option on a trailer plow. Some newer trailer plows have trip beams rather than trip hitch. Also most newer trailer plows have hydraulic lift rather than trip lift.

All three; mounted, semi-mounted and trailer plows since 1960 very likely have trip beams.

For that very reason, folks should define more clearly what they are indicating by the use of the word TRIP. Is it trip hitch, trip lift or trip beam. When I hear the words TRIP PLOW, all I can think of is walking out behind the barn in the dark and tripping on the plow. Believe me, most plow parts are damn hard on one's shins. I hope that doesn't start more confusion, plow shins or my shins.

A trip plow is a plow that the bottoms have a tripping mechanism on them. A trail plow pulls behind a tractor not mounted on the tractor. You can have a trail plow that has bottoms that trip. Also a trail plow can have with a mechanical lift or cylinder lift....James

A trip plow is one that has a rope type trip to raise or lower it.

Atrail plow is one that is pulled by the tractor
--no three or two point system-- and can be a trip plow or hydraulic lift. I think!
