I finally found a 3 bottom hyd trailer plow for my '53 Super M. I think it's a JD (rusty green and yellow). Coulters and bottoms are in good shape. I've never plowed in my life...what are the basics of settin' her up? All of the adjustments are workable (not rusted)...and I have the hydraulics working OK. I understand the whole "take it shallow and easy first" thing. Just want to make sure I'm not doing extra work cause the plow's not set up right.

On a hydrolic lift John Deere plow there is only one lever and it sets the tilt of the plow, raising or lowering the furrow wheel. The hydrolic cylinder thru a stop on the cylinder controls the depth. Only clutch lift plow have two levers. Try to identify the make and model, then get an operators manual and it will tell you how to hook it up

The right lever on a pull-type plow is for leveling the plow frame to the ground. Left lever sets the depth. First round, you need to raise the right lever to drop the first bottom enough to level the frame, since the plow wheel is on top of the ground, not in a previous furrow. Second round you reset the lever and leave it there until you start a new land. Hooking to the tractor- you need to align the line of draft. Basic rule is centerline of draft is 1/4 of the plow bottom width to the left of centerline of cut of the plow. That is where your plow hitch should be set. Hook to your tractor hitch (centered on the tractor) and align your right tractor wheel so it runs in the furrow.

Want to plow 7 inches deep? On a level surface ,block under the left land wheel with a 7 inch block. Set the bottoms on the level surface.Then use the levers to level the plow.That should get you very close to perfect.----- Except on the first pass set the right wheel the same as the left.The tail wheel should make a light tire print in the bottom of the furrow, but don't worry about that for a couple rounds.
