broken gang bolt.

One of the gang bolts broke on my 18 disk offset Amco harrow ($130). The harrow has 3 bearings per section. When I started installing the new bolt I found that the three bearings did not line up. I cut one of the bearings supports, moved it until the disks turned freely and welded it back together. Probably another way to do it, but i didn't want to dissemble the harrow. I will check for breaks and reweld them. I would advise anyone with a harrow gang with more than two bearings to check to see if the gang turn freely. I'm sure the bolt was flexing for a long time and metal fatigue caused it to break.

Even if you only have two gang bearing hangers on a section, you also have to be careful about their alignment lengthways...

Be sure and leave at least one hanger loose on the main beam before you tighten the gang bolt all the way... Otherwise, you can pull the hangers in towards each other putting a terrible strain on the bearings, hangers, and gang bolt...

(learned on a self-paid scholarship at the school of hard knocks...)

i think you mean the axle the disk are mounted on. lots of luck with the weld job. disk take quite a bit of punishment. be sure the blades are on tight and re check them after a few minutes of use.

Yeah, I used it a little and tightened it. Probably will need it again. I always called them axles also, but the John Deere place where I got it referred to it as gang bolt.
