New Holland 269 Haydogs -How many?

I have a NH 269 baler with a Super Sweep pickup. I've just gotten a set of manuals. Looking at the haydogs on the baler, I count 3 on top and 2 on bottom. The manual (dated 11-65) shows only 2 on top and one in the center on the bottom. Was this just a cost saving change or is there a functional reason for fewer haydogs. It says the same for the NH 268 baler -3 total. Does someone know the reason for this change? How many haydogs does a 273 baler have? I believe the 273 replaced the 269.

The first year 268 and 269 balers had 3 hay dogs, the rest had 5. The 273 has 5.

Today the balers brought: NH273 $425; NH276 -kicker missing $625; NH269 w/kicker $225; NH268 w/kicker $225; NH270 $185; NH268 $140; NH310 w/kicker $475; Massey #10 $175. I bought two of them.

My 268 has 5 haydogs, don't know why. Do know it works best when all are there and working!

I have a 273, and I believe it has 5 haydogs. I will check, and reply tomorrow. I can't get to the baler right now. I would suspect that New Holland increased the amount of haydogs on the units, I couldn't see how 3 would hold the charge well enough to bale correctly.

It's possibly an error in the parts manual. My baler is serial #20400. They started making them in 1964 to 68. Mine would be one of the first ones made as most of the serial numbers I've seen are like 178xxx or 216xxx (six digits). As I said my manual is dated 11-65,(about the 3rd revision). It makes it look like they went from 5 down to 3 haydogs. -Maybe back to 5 again. It's not real important, but would be interesting to know.

Its is really funny how USA call them haydogs, and the Canadians (MF) call them retards...

My #10 has 6 so I wouldn't think that they would have less than 5 unless it was the first made and they changed it the next year..

I'm very confused now. I just got home from the site of a consignment auction this weekend. They have about 6 NH balers. I'd checked serial numbers and models. I've even taken pictures.
Here goes: NH#269 Serial#9426 Three total (two-top, one-bottom); NH#270 Serial#9521 -Three total; NH#268 Serial#20997 -Three total; then my NH#269 Serial#20400 Five total (three-top, two-bottom); NH#268 Serial#33641 Five total; and a NH#273 Serial#170604 Five total. I didn't think that the #270 was built at the same time as the #269. A note, the reason we call them haydogs may be because in the NH operators manual, that is what they are called.

More is better without a shred of doubt. Install as many as there are mounts for on your baler. If there is evidence of broken or missing mounts as can happen, repair or replace them and install dogs there as well. Forget your parts manual; go look at your bale chamber.

My #269 has all five still in place. I was just wondering why or when did they go from three to five. I agree more is better, my baler also has the Super Sweep pickup.
My parts manual must be for the earlier ones. There is also a Massey #3 baler on the sale on Sat.

Niether of my NH balers are as new, but the S67 and 68 only have 3 each.
