Another foolish question - How good a job does a 56 do in grass hay ? Are the gearboxes easy / inexpensive to rebuild ? Like all the old rakes I've looked at it's been changed to one wheel drive . Is there a reason for this or is it just not cost effective in some peoples eyes to fix a broken shaft , u-joint or hub ? Thanks ...Randy

Can anyone tell me what size tires the 56 rake takes? Our dealer parts book doesn't list anymore and the ones on it when I bot it were 205s. Seem a little large for it.

Any help much appreciated,

Frank

I like the job mine does. Bought it at auction 2 years ago and noticed the right wheel wobbling.

Cost a bunch of $ to replace the hub and box .

Randy,

They are good rakes and will serve you well. We have a 56 and 256 and even though they are not identical in design they perform pretty much the same.

The gearboxes are easy to rebuild and parts are readily available. The bearings and seals are all available aftermarket, but frankly, the prices from CNH are not all that bad.

If you plan to make good sized windrows, fix the drive system and the ratchets in the hubs (it is usually a broken spring)so both wheels drive and put the proper Traction Implement tires on it. Miller Tire has the proper tires.

I wouldn't bother with cheap aftermarket teeth. The steel teeth from CNH are only $1.32 ea.. However, the special carriage bolts used to mount the steel teeth are a bit pricey from CNH, so we use a regular hardened (Grade 5) carriage bolt with the special CNH clip.

Good luck,
Scott

they are a good rake. Like they say, put a real aggressive mud and snow byass tire on the gearbox side. no problems with parts or the rake in general...

You asked about grass hay. Here is the only problem we have had with our NH 56. If the grass is cut with a sickle and not rowed up AND your rake has old car tires there is a tendency for the rake to slide at times in heavy hay. Switched the bald old tires for ag tires and it worked fine. Just an observation. They are good rakes.

We have had a 56 for about 28 years now. Very good rake, hard to tell it from a 256 and easy to get parts for.

Where does a person get aftermarket parts for these old rakes. I have a 259 that needs some rake teeth.

Aftermarket teeth in reply to wildone, 04-04-2007 14:42:50
The vast majority of aftermarket teeth, be they steel or rubber mount offer little or no real savings. A little cheaper to buy, yes, but they simply do not last as well as OEM. That being said, just about any retailer of aftermarket Ag parts offers teeth for NH rolabar hay rakes.

I bought some teeth from one place, they were not as hardened as wet noodles. Yikes. Went back to my other farm supply store, and those are pretty good. Really haven't bought too many from the dealer, I rake a lot of road/ water ditches & am pretty hard on teeth, go through about 20-30 a year.

Anyhow, yes there are different qualities, that's for sure!

What I like about the 56 is, there`s enough of them around.
I bought one years ago, and the gearbox went out, bought another one with a new shaft on it at an auction for less than I could fix the gearbox for. Couple of years later, the dogs went out of the second rake, but I had all the parts I needed from the first one. To make a short story long, they`re as good as any, better than some, and easy to find parts for.
