Square baling rate

Had a friend hit me up the other day to square bale some oat hay he fixing to cut. He is going to cut and rake it and going to try to bale it himself but asked what I would charge to square bale it for him if he has trouble with his baler.
I will be baling with a wire baler (JD 346) and it only a couple miles from me so no big issue on traveling. He thinks it will make around 250 bales, about 4-5 acres.
Not done allot of square baling, mostly do round so not sure what is a fair price for both of us would be.

With the price of fuel and oil I think $1.00 per bale would be a closer rate. Hal

Iowa state custom rate sheet say's .45 to .65 range.

We charge $0.70 per bale for baling only. This is for decent fields. If we are in odd shaped fields or ones that are difficult, we charge $175/hour for baling.

I usually get 1$ to cut rake and bale, or $.50 just to bale here in nw AR. Last time I did a small field just baling, I made 75$ on 150 bales, and tore up a hundred bucks worth of parts. mabey youll do better though.

They get $1 per small sq bale to cut rake and bale it. Since he has cut it, raked it, and it is ready to bale, then I would charge about 50 cents per bale; based on the rate here. Find out what custome balers are charging and then charge half. Tom

You local ag extension office can most likely provide you with the rates for cut,rake,bale etc in your area.

The one in NWMO mailed me a nice packet of info on all that when I called her.

Your local Ag extension office will run you broke with that info. I got a buck a bale in 1990 to mow, rake and bale and didn't get rich then. Of course the Northeast tends to be the high rent district, but I charged about double for most operations listed in any surveys published at the time and had plenty of work. Wearing out equipment solely for experience without a profit margin is worse than leaving it parked.
