I know of a NH 495 that I could get pretty reasonable, looks to be decent shape. Anything in particular that's good or bad about these (besides the goofy endways transport)? If nothing else, would it be worth buying for the rolls? They're in good shape, and I was wondering if they'd fit my 489.

I had two of them the first was wore out when I bought it, still used it several years. The wobble box frame did break off of it and i welded back on ywo or three times. Then I traded it for one in very good condition. I got new guards and a new sicle in the trade deal, I mowed about 2000 acres before I ever pulled the sicle the first time in these Southwest MO rocks. I did have them put in a sicle with the self sharping sections. My Brother In Law still uses it. I could mow 27 acres in 4 hrs with it using a 756 D in low 4th. I caught my son using high 1st a few times but I didn'd like to pullin that fast.

Make sure you check the belt alignment between the gear box and the wobble box. If there is any deviation the sub-frame may be weak or broken.

I used our 495 for 5 cuttings before the sub-frame gave out, it is now sitting behind the shed as the repair would have been about $3000 in labor.

We now have a very nice NH 499 that is a dream compared to the 495 since it has the split sickle and the pivot tongue.

The only thing bad about 'em is that they could sure be another 4 feet wider for my liking. That 12' is a bit narrow.

However, they are one hay cuttin' monster!

There is a large grease zerk coming up from the bottom right under that hitch swing lock. Keep it greased good or else the thing will "hang" when you try to change the tongue position.

Other than that, you'll probably want to park the 489. :>)
