what's a NH 67 baler worth and how good is it?

A friend has a New Holland 67 baler sitting in his shed. He was storing it for a guy and the guy hasn't been around for 2 or 3 years to pay up the storage rent. Attempts have been made to contact him but to no avail. At this point, we assume the guy is long gone and has forgotten about the baler.

That being said, my friend was gonna scrap it but I figure it's worth something for someone as a baler and know of someone else who could use it. The sprockets and such look to be in very good shape on the knotters but I'm not very familiar with them. No breaks or welds anywhere. Kicker looks good but that doesn't matter as the other guy will take it off. A few teeth are missing on the pickup. The sheet metal has a lot of surface rust and pitting like it sat outside a lot, but no holes.

Were these units pretty good at baling? Are parts still available? How much are they worth?

I baled with a NH 67 baler for 12 years. The only problem would be knotter trouble if too much chaff gathered in the knotters. I used either an AC D17, or a MF 65 to operate it and pull a flatbead wagon behind with someone stacking. This little baler had a tremendous capacity for digesting hay and spitting out bales.

I have one and I love it. It is a good old baler.

Do not sell as scrap!

Put and ad in the local paper with no price. Let someone make an offer.

Last summer I purchased a NH 66 for $100. Before I could pull it out of the farmer's barn, he had three offers over the phone to buy it for $300 site unseen. I put new (used) tires on it and works just fine. I would have paid $500 myself but he was only asking $100. I spent the other $400 for misc other old implements laying around the farm yard; NI 251 sickle mower; little giant plow on rubber, MD grain drill on wooden wheel, buzz saw w/o flywheel. I let him come out an help me make hay now. He seems to really enjoy seeing his old equipment get used.

It"s really a joy to read an article like this where the former owner still gets to be around and help with his former machinery. Thanks for posting.

I didn't mention that the baler was working when I first got it home. My brother-in-law broke it on the first time out (while I was at my daughter's graduation). Bob came over for days helping me determine exactly what all broke. Somehow bent the arm that pulls the twine off the knotter. While trying to straighten the arm Bob broke that piece. A week later he called me to say he "found" a replacement for $10. We slipped it on there and away we went baling.

He was a big help in teaching me how to set the baler for the two types of hay we were making. 100% grass and 50/50 grass/alfalfa. I couldn't get him to drive my tractor. He insisted on walking along the baler and checking it at first. Then once working OK, we hooked up a flat rack and he stacked the hay. That's when I really became nervous, but he didn't fall off and get hurt ;-)

I am hoping to get his old New Idea sickle mower working this Spring. He said it works but he warned me the Pitman bar is metal instead of wood. I haven't found a replacement wooden pitman. No New Idea dealers nearby. Can't find it on line either. Looking for NI Model 251 pitman arm. HELP!

Once I get the part, I will call him up and see if he wants to help me replace the metal one. Then we will "give her a go" as Bob says! The knives and rock gards all look good. Better than the ones on my NH 479 haybine.

I have an old New Idea mower and make all my pittmans. Table saw, measuring tape, and a drill.

I had one which gave good service. Look under the knotters on the bale chamber to see if there is much rust there. Check sides of bale case where needle arm is attached to see if the bale case has started to rust through. 67 has slides instead of rollers on plunger. Have no idea what they are worth now.
