I"m thinking about buying one and had a question. How do you set the cutting height on one of these? Is it all adjusted by the little tail wheel on the back of the mower? My tractor doesn"t really have position control as I"m using a 3 point conversion. Just wondered if this would be a problem. If the mower tail wheel is what sets the height then it should work OK. Thanks for any ideas.

You will probably figure out the best adjustment after mowing and fooling with a few different settings, like the ones suggested. My ford's leveling box is jammed since I've owned it and surprisingly it's only off a little, don't notice it when cutting, but the 6 ft rhino I use, seems to be slightly lower in the front, did the tail wheel adjustment once since I've had it, cuts grasses pretty good like that, and seems level and neat like a finish mower on a high setting. I keep the blades sharp and check to make sure the gear box is tight to the mower etc. runs smooth no vibration.

2 things come to mind, when turning it needs to be floating, not dragging or you will tear up the turf or dig in etc. The other is if you are going to hit heavier brush, high grass, weeds etc. that position control lever is really nice to have if you spot something ahead by the front wheels, you can lift it up to clear whatever it is or if it bogs down you can lift it up to help clear it out or raise it up before you hit whatever it is you would like to avoid. Without position control I'd want to know the mowing areas, fields, keep the grass/weeds from getting too high and mark out any large rocks, holes, ditches etc. before mowing. Mine does not have live pto and although I need to get an overunning clutch, I work around it, keep a sharp eye out for things and if I need to stop the tractor, I let er down, the grass/weeds stops it very quickly, without position control I could not do that and would not mow unless I had an overunning clutch adapter on the pto, probably ought to get that for this year, they are like $40 or so.

You want almost all rotary mowers to set just a little low in front-1/2"to 1". The best setup that I have used is the Allis-Chalmers toplink that has a chain that extends up from each bottom tph pin up to a piece of bent round iron which rests in one of ten or twelve notches on the toplink piece. This allows for on-the-go changing of the mowing height, with no tools, just lift, change height, and keep mowing.

You will probably need limiter chains that go from the base of the 3pt tower on the mower to the tractor end of the top link to control the front height of your mower. Look at any 3 pt finish mower as an example.

you want the bush hog to sit level from front to back by adjusting both the tail wheel height and the third arm on the tractor to the height you want to cut. i have a 6 foot bush hog and couldn"t get it to cut right until i got the old welder out and bought another tail wheel and comverted it from one tail wheel to two wheels spread about 3 to 4 foot apar. works good now.
