Hi guys, I"m Looking at a Hesston Stackhand 10 at an auction on Tuesday April 2nd. What do I Need to look for What"s Right & Wrong? And How Much are these still Worth??? Thanks Jeff.

I bought a #10 a couple years ago. I like it for what I use it for. Check the chains. They are old machines, the chains stretch, and are so low to the ground they snag on the ground if the tires sink in wet or soft soil. Be sure they are not bent up, and that they still have adjustment left. The drive belt is real costly if it needs to be replaced. Also, the #10 only does 2 rows at a time. If you have a lot of acres to do, you will get a lot more done in the same amount of time with a 6 row stalk chopper with a windrow attachment and a round baler. Just for reference, I paid $1400 for mine, and I found several for less since then.

Some 30 years ago, I debated with myself whether to get the 10 or a round baler. I ended up with the baler. There were a number of 10"s in NW Iowa in those days, and as we drove down the highway, it seemed that big winds would mess up the stacks pretty bad, especially corn stalk stacks. Just my observation.

i think you can still get the chains from sloanes or shoups. i would love to get one myself later this year. i dont want to spend money on belts or twine or netting and since i am not planning on selling hay.ithink they would be great.they are supposedly kind of heavy on tongue so might need at least 60-70hp tractor mostly for the weight. think the hp doesnt have to be high. also can harvest corn stalks with them. neighbor used to have one and i think he liked it fine
they usually go reasonable.
