If you're talking about the actual structural parts that hold the box together, it could have been oak or ash. If it's the toungue and groove boards that make the actual box itself, old 3" house flooring might match it, if that brand of wagon used that style of board. Jim

1/4" diamond plate always works good too

All the factory made beds were pine, I would never use one of the hardwoods that everybody recomends on any wagon bed as they double the weight and are no stronger or last any longer than the pine the factorys used. Cottonwood would be a good choice if you can get it as it is lighter in weight but as with any other wood you need to keep then all in the dry.

Try to get white oak. Most lumberyards only carry red oak (if they carry oak at all). Red oak is good for interior use, but has poor rot resistance.

Cedar is likely too weak for your purposes. Yellow pine would be a good choice, due to its good strength and rot resistance. Fir (hemlock or Douglas fir) is another good choice.

I agree that oak would be best. However, I have a flare box that is still in good condition that was built by my father in the middle 1940's. He used oak for under floor and bracing pieces and edge grain fir for the floor, sides, and ends.

we made a new floor in the kids pony wagon with oak but be sure to drill the holes just a bit bigger than the fasteners and fairly close to the edge so they dont cup up .
