I sold my old NH chainer, and I am going to upgrade to a belt baler. Any suggestions? I do silage and some transporting so I want 4' wide. I figure a 650 would be a good economical choice. Local dealer has a rough trade for $4800 but by the time I got paint on it I would have into it what a good one is worth. They say it is field ready.... Any wear points to keep in mind when looking at these balers? How exactly do you tell when the belts are shot? Thanks

There was never a 650 Silage Special, but that is not the end of life as we know it. Plan on installing a pair of infeed discs if you buy this and bale silage. Check the condition of the idler gears between the sledge rolls; Sharp teeth = worn out. Check the pickup cams; slack the belts and check all the rolls for rough bearings. I sure wouldn't invest in paint until i ran it for a year to see if it were a 'keeper'. It will either be a rough looking baler that works well or a POS with shiny paint.

You lost me after the first sentence...What are infeed discs? Where are the idler gears and sledge rolls? Do the idler gears have teeth like a typical spur gear? I am a mechanical engineer so I know most things mechanical, but not the specifics on these balers. Guess I need to go down there on Sunday with some tools and really check it out good.
