Hi All , Is it advisable to pull a JD 555H about 23 miles home behind my tractor or pickup or should I get it on a truck or trailer ? That's the problem though , no way to load it at the sellers house . He lives in town and the plow is at that house not out at his farm . It has a brand new tailwheel but some of the tailwheel bushings are a touch loose and the land axle has a slight bend to it that causes a toe in condition . I'll need to change the front tire on the furrow side also before I would attempt to drag it home . Any ideas on how to straighten the axle ? Heat or cold bend it ? It got bent inward when it was dropped off the trailer when he bought it years ago . He said it doesn't affect it as much in transport position as it does in the plowing postion . Any advice on any of this ? Thanks ...Randy

I just pulled my 4 bottom old JD twelve miles with my pickup. I went about 20 miles an hour. Mine had a place on the small back wheel for a bolt to hold it solid--pulled just like a new two wheeled trailer. Grease wheels good first.

when pulling a disk, turning plow, etc which has a loose tongue in itif you will use a come along tied to the front of the tongue and to one corner of the plow and pull it tight it will take the play out of the tongue and it want whip around with you while going down the highway. you need to pull this one on a trailer going that far. it not worth getting run over from behind by some idiot driver. there is plenty of them out there who just get mad if they get behind you and have to wait until they get a place to pass you. i had a pickup truck pass me in the ditch on the right hand side of the road once.

I think I'm going to see if I can fit it on my little 4x10 utility trailer some how ( converted boat trailer ) . Might lay some 4x4 cribbing crossways and put a sheet of 3/4" structural 7 ply plywood on that . Otherwise the man I'm getting it from has a narrow front wheel tractor dolly I could put the rear wheel into and pull it backwards as some suggested . About 2/3rds of the trip would be on country blacktop and the rest on gravel roads with one small town to go through ( the only bridge across the river for miles in either direction ) . People around here are mostly farmers so VERY few people get irrate about slow tractors . I'll get it here somehow , it'll just take some pondering . Thanks ...Randy

I have pulled my #8 2-16" IH plow for 4-5 miles. It will swing back and forth like crazy unless you lower the plow (with the levers) so the moldboards run about 4-5" off the ground. When I lower my plow, I can pull it with my H Farmall at about 1/3 throttle and then there is no sway. Be careful that you don't hit any road surface when you enter a driveway with it lowered like that. That tail wheel has only a bushing instead of bearings so that worries me a little about road travel. Pull it over 20 miles?? No. Not me.

Depends a little on the roads. I just did a 555H 2 miles on a country road with no mean looks. Also helps if you have an interesting tractor pulling it(I had a JD D hydraulics not hooked to anything, of course). Just wave at everyone and have thick skin. Also, it trailed beautifully...at 5.3 mph!

My youngest son pulled a 3 bottom 30 miles . He jacked up the back and put a clevis on the tail wheel axel . He hooked that to his pickup . He greases the front wheels , chained the tongue & drove away

Plow 8 hours at 3 mph and you've done 24 miles. Didn't wear out the plow either.

Just pull it slowly.

Probly shouldn't bring this up again. I would tow it home in a minute if the bearings were well greased. Last time I put one on a trailer it come loose and chased me part of the way home. Takes more trailer than you (or at least I) think.

I have a 555H plow. I probably would pull it if it was a real nice day and I felt like taking a slow, slow tractor ride. Remember that this is an older plow with some loosenes, some things sprung a mite here and there and if the bolt slot to lock the tail wheel has opened up at all, --well--just realize that you are gong to be pulling a shimmying and shaking "slow boat to China." We pull our 555H about 5 miles to a plow day every spring and it's a slow go. I would hire someone to truck or trailer it for you. If you were only going a few miles, then pull it.

You could pull it home if you don't get in BIG hurry, they like to swing around. But it can be done just put along, and you not actually talinf all that far. otherwise borrow trailer again and haul it home. No big deal either way. If you do pull it make sure the pin is in it to lock it up!!!!

If this is a 3-wheel trailer plow, you are in for one long miserable day. They shimmy & shake at 10 mph, assuming the usual loose hitch & rear wheel areas.

It can be done. Be sure it is held up good, so it doesn't drop on you with a bump or pothole.

I'd do what I could to find a trailer.

I would not want to pull a trailer type plow more than a mile or two. They just don't follow that well. Those plows are not all that heavy, do as the other guy said and pull it onto a trailer using a come-a-long. It will be a much more enjoyable trip.

Randy: Not familiar with a 555H but I'm getting the message it's trailer plow. I've seen guys fabricate parts to bolt a wagon tongue to back of plow and tow it backwards with back wheel off ground. I've never done this with a plow, however I had two of the old side delivery rakes, on rubber with big wheel at front and 12" caster wheels behind. I had a tongue that would fit the back of either rake. We towed them that way behind pickup quite regularly. It gets rid of sway and switching created by the casters.

As far as pulling it 23 mile shouldn't be a problem. We used to road equipment that far all the time. Just make sure all the barings are good and full of grease. As for straightening the land axle, heat would be the way to go. Take a chance on it cracking if you bend it cold.
