My neighbor reciently gave me a 14T Deere Baler he had used to farm with. The trouble is it hasnt been used in 8 years. It needs a new knotter, But was there anything else should a person look at to get the machine up and running again? I know most of the basics like lubrication, timing knotters etc., but is there anything a person should pay attention to? Should I automatically replace the wheel bearings, u-joints, and chains if they are still in good shape?? Im fairly new to this mechainics stuff so any Help is Greatly Appreciated !!! Thanks!!!!!

I wouldn't. I would just inspect the u-joints for slop, and look at the chains and bearings. If the chains are good (look at the sprockets, if the "point's" are sharp the chain is likely worn out to, and if you max out any adjustments setting chain tension replace them.) If the u-joints will accept grease and there are no pits or stains on the wheel bearings I would repack them with grease and go.

If you can get a owners manual or parts book I would look for all the places that use a spring to make sure that they are all there. I would replace any that are rusted heavily as they will probably break.

Get the knotter replaced, check the knife arms (the rotating brass balls for flat spots, replace if they are)and sharpen the twine cutting end. Sharpen the plunger knife if it needs it and check the gap between it and the fixed knife. I don't know the specs for a 14T, but 1/32 should be adequate. You might consider changing the lube in the plunger transmission, if nothing else drain out any water and top off. Check the timing of the knotters and needles then have at it.

If you have problems making knots or bale shape post back...

LUBE the wheel bearings and "U" joints; if good; GOOD chains prevent breakdowns and "jumping time".

Sharpen the knives; make all the knife and plungerhead adjustments shown in the owner's manual; time the feeder and knotters; and adjust the knotters and needles.

HAVE FUN!!!

And; BE CAREFULL!! STOP tractor to lube or adjust baler!

The 14T in its day was a real good baler. The first thing I would do is get the manual, yes you can still get them from JD I did a couple years ago fir the 14T we have. One thing to make sure works is the plunger stop because if it doesn't work and it gets out of time it will brake parts that would cost more to replace then it would be worth. I know I had it happen and when it did it took out both knotters and the needles, to fix it would have cost me more then $1000
