Sanding/repainting my JD 3010: newbie question

This is my first attempt at trying to restore anything to its intended beauty...
The paint on the hood wore off long ago(prior owners), lots of surface rust, it isn't rusted through. My wife calls it my brown tractor. I have all the paint off and 99% of the rust.

My question is I still see a few dark areas, not as bright as just the bare metal. Hood is smooth, so it isn"t full of pits. Do I need to sand down to eliminate all the darker areas?(Will rust come back out??) So far I have been painting with 2 coats primer, 2 green coats and then 1 or two clear coats...

This is a working tractor, not for show but I do want it to look good...

If you're going to use hardener in your paint you need to use a supplied air system. You don't want to breathe any of that paint spray. Most of the paint cans have this warning on them. Hal

If you want the paint to last, treat the rust like the other poster says. Then prime the tractor with epoxy primer.Its the ONLY paint that is impervious to water. Then use John Deere Green with hardner. And filter all paint with those little funnel like paper filters. Then carefully watch the paint as it goes on the metal from the spray gun.

What I would use is a rust inhibitor...such POR-15. Go to www.eastwoodco.com, you will find it there...along with a bunch of other body stuff. You can use the POR-15 as an actual primer. Just thought i should let you know. -Nathan-

There's a man in Ohio who redoes these tractors.
This tractor was owned by a tractor dealer and wanted it painted. He has restored several for himself. His dad is involved in it too. He has
a Super W6TA and a Fairway 12 that were done several years ago. Here's pictures of them. Hal
