How to plow a ditch?

Morning, fellas. I tried to cut a ditch along my driveway (1/8 mi) with my backhoe dipper and managed to get it done but it ain't purty. I was looking at my old 901 Ford and her Dearborn back blade (5 ft?). Is it feasible/recommended that you use that to plow a ditch? Could I get enough tilt through the adjuster to make it work? How do you guys make/maintain your ditches?

I was just thinking about doing that with my 9n again as soon as it dries up around here. Just angle the blade all the way, and use the three point adjustment all the way tilted until you have a direct sharp edge right behind the right rear tire. Now drive down in the ditch and line her up. It is easier to get it going and look straight ahead. I actually went slow and had dad ride on the scraper blade to add cutting weight and fill me in on the progress. It worked really good. I am going to do this again pretty soon. Later.

When the yuppie farm stores sell blades without tilt, what they are really doing is guaranteeing them selves a future sale. Same way with much of the other pieces of equipment you see sitting around in front of those stores. People need to go talk to a real tractor dealer, even about very small equipment. There is a reason you don't see 40 straight blades and 40 box blades stacked up at a JD dealer. They sell equipment that actually works, while the yuppie farm stores sell barn lot ornaments. That is my opinion of the toy implements that your dog food stores sell.

I had a 16" single bottom breaking plow and I would run that once in each direction to plow a ditch. I have also used a back blade with angle and tilt. I set the tilt with the 3 pt right side lift arm adjustment and angle the blade back the maximum ammount and made two passes. I seen my neighbors do the same thing with their flood irrigation dtches.

I did that a couple years ago with a MF 35 and
a 6' back blade. Don't expect more than a 16" ditch

i do like jhill52 does. i set the front plow as deep as it will go and the third plow just barely touching the ground and break the ditch twice. once in each directions then a land scaping box to pull the dirt out of the ditch and spread it out real smooth on each side of the ditch. i never pick the landscaping bucket up and just go round and round down into the ditch and back out just in big circles. it takes a while but you will have a "v" ditch that will be ease to mow. a "v" shaped ditch carries a lot of water, more so than just a narrow trench. never cross the ditch with the land scaping box down. just run it parrell to the bottom of the ditch and you'll be surprised how well it will look. good luck.

You really need a blade that does tilt/angle, and stick the tip into the ground and use it as a plow. I don't think you will get enough with just arm adjustment, and you just don't get enough weight out there on the end with the 5' blades.

I've got an 8' blade that I can tilt/angle, but the 861 won't even touch pulling it. I use it behind a JD4020. You can use it to angle cut a ditch, but it takes a while to do.

I use a mowboard plow to clean out the ditch by my driveway.

I use an 8' landpride blade. Tilt and angle the blade and it acts similar to the v-ditcher allan pictured below. Just have to do one side at a time. Keep running it deeper and deeper.

did both sides of my driveway (800') in a couple of days. But I went back and picked up all the dirt to use for fill elsewhere.

I use a moldboard plow to rough out the ditch. It may make several passes but moves alot of dirt quickly. Then I finish up with my back blade.

I guess it depends upon how big a ditch you are talking about. I use a V ditcher in the field but have used a heavy back blade capable of tilt and angle to make a ditch.
