Dose anybody have any information on the JD model 165 3pt backhoe attachment. I have a line on a used unit however I would like to know if it had any design/reliability issues as well as the years it was manufactured. I will be using it on a 45 HP tractor with AUX hydraulics.?

Hi Dave , I purchased the Backhoe however it has the same problem yours initially had, several welded cracks in the pivot swing. There is some play in the other pivot assemblies but not to much. All cylinders and valve bodies are good, no leaks and chrome is not pitted. Looking at the welded pivot swing, it looks like it is just a pipe with the bearing caps welded on. Am I correct? If this is the case should I just remove it a properly weld it back up or should I just make a new part? I have looked for this part in several salvage yards and it dosent seem to be available anyware. Any sugestions?

I had one of those in the 1990's. Where the boom turns right or left, the 5" pipe split and let the boom drop It was partly split and welded when I got it.I cut the tube out and replaced it, and no
problems after that. Replaced a lot of bushings
and all the hoses. Bad leaks in one Hyd valve.
Sounds like it was worn out when I got it, I think it was. I paid $2200 Sold it 10 yrs later $2500

Dave, thanks for the reply. The one I am going to look at is in real good shape, or so I am told. The guy wants $2700.00 for it. I have very limited experiance running a backhoe. Regarding the capabilities of the unit is it a good digger. I want this to do drainage, 4'footings and tree stump removal. Is this the proper size for this type work?

Thanks ----- ---- Paul

Before you buy, give it a good shake at all the joints to see how bad the bushings are. The teeth on the bucket should have replaceable teeth over them If its been used without them it is repareable
but you need a torch and a welder. Look on the bottom of the valves for leaks. If it has any of these problems try to get it for less although the
ones I have seen at auctions lately bring about $2500 to $3500. It will be just the thing for the
projects you listed. If you get it, try to get an
operator's manual from JD publications.

Dave, thanks again for the information. I will be calling the seller today to schedule my visit and if as described bringing it home. Do you think it can be transported in the back of a 3/4 ton pick up truck without damaging the truck body? It is a Dodge Ram 4x8 long bed?

Thanks ----- - Paul

That truck might handle the weight allright but you will have trouble tying it down because you will have to have the stabilizers up in order to
get it in the truck and then it will tip over and smash the sides of the truck. I hauled mine on a 1 ton flat bed with the stabs. down Much better to get a car hauler trailer to move it on.
