Have any of you experienced purchasing fence wire-the field fence type that has large square on the top, but gets more rectangular to the bottom. The question is, Why haven't the manufacturers put the class on the labels. I have recently learned that the class of the fence indicates the thickness of the galvanizing, and some is produced with no galvanizing on it at all. How can you tell between them? Do you need to rely on the seller's knowledge? How long will the non galvanized last-I know area may be the big influence here. If any of you are going to be putting up fence look into this. I wouldn't want non galvanized wire even if I have to pay more.

I have used what is known as field fence and it has the galvanizing on it. It is the kind that has one wire looped around the other to make the grid.What I really prefer is the wire that is welded like what contractors use in concrete. There was a time when I used that fence as a ladder to get out of the way of some mad momma cow and I can tell you the the field fencing would not have supported my weight and I probably would have had some help going over the fence. That said I do not care if the fence around my corral looks a little rusty or not as long as it serves the purpose. This fence does not sag like the field fence will either. Bud

i didnt know that you could buy ungalvanized fence after living on farms and farming most of my 46 years. i never have got to see a key for the classes either.we yhave always went by the fence wire guage and wire spacing.

I build fence of all types in central Ky, and there is about 5 classes of wire. The higher the class the longer it will last. The best that I know of is King Ranch. It is all no 9 except The top strand and it is 6 gauge it will last more than 40 years, however it is over 200 dollars a roll. You get what you pay for. I have a farm rented that was divided 31 years ago due to a death and it was fenced with locust post and King Ranch wire most post have rotted and fell over the wire looks like new and we get a lot of rain and high humidity.

does the king ranch come in different wire spacings? never heard of them. almost sounds like what the state highway depts. used to put up along the interstates. i think it was all #9 guage.

Today I learned that wire I had purchased does not have enough galvanizing on it to be "classed" as the manufacturer put it. According to the manufacturer wire is rated as class 1-3 with 3 having the heaviest galvanizing. The stuff I bought isn't classed because it isn't treated enough. I have looked at several stores, and class isnt on the labels. Wire gauge is, but no reference to class. Buyer beware.
