JD 24T Broken Feeder Fingers Question

I'm looking at a Deere 24T baler that has had the feeder fingers broken off. I haven't had a chance to find out from the owner how it happened, but would this happen from the baler getting out of time and the plunger hitting them?

When I go back to look at it, what else should be checked out for possible injury? Both needles are OK, although the right side looks new. Just wanted to do some research before going back and talking to the owner. Thanks for the help.

Yes. The plunger will smash the fingers if they are "out of timei.

Re-time according to operator's manual. (If you don't have a manual a site search may turn up the instructions from the last time I typed them out.)

If the chains are AT ALL worn replace them as worn chains "jump" and make the baler "jump time".
