I am gatting ready to buy a 4 basket(17') tedder and have run across afew ads for these rake tedder combinations. How well do these work? Do they both ted and rake well or just barely do either? I know New Holland has had these out for a few years. I am specifically looking at a Hesston 3750 simply because it appears to be able to cover a 16-17' swath. I would like to hear about any good or bad experiences with these before putting down the $ for a new one. Thanks in advance for any input.

I bought two 254 NH rake tedders brand new many years ago. They could only do about 1200 to 1500 acres, then they were wore out.We had to replace the cams at 1000 acres. We went to the 4 rotor tedder and finger wheel rake. The sitrex 4 rotor is a very good machine. We ted at 14 to 16 mph at 1300 to 1500 rpm and it does an excellent job of spreading. There are alot of them in this area and they just keep on running.Italian made, grease the rotors every day you,ll be fine.We also ran a JD 752 for 6000 acres and it ran fine when sold.We got the sitrex for the hydaulic fold.Good luck

Thanks for the comments. I am having a hard time trying to decide what to do. I think I am leaning towards a 4 basket tedder and running the old rolabar rakes a few more years. My only problem now is which tedder. I have located a new Sitrex for about 3500 and talked to the local NH guys and they say around 6000 for a NH. That is a lot of money for my operation but I really have some hangups about buying the cheap foreign stuff. Decisions, decisions.

I have a 255 NH rake/tedder, It's the newer one. Has bigger tires, more sealed bearings=fewer grease zerks. It was used when I got it but, not abused. I have had good luck with it and only had to grease it so far. I grease it every 5-6 acres. It will tedd hay very well and rakes a nice fluffy windrow. Down side is it's only one windrow,I don't use it at max width. about 13'. I use it mostly for raking as I have a 17' four star tedder to tedd with. I use two NH rakes for doubling lighter hay also and may use the 255 to fluff if needed before baling. Have heard they can be big $ to repair also.

I had a New Holland 255 rake/tedder and it was the biggest money pit. I constantly had to replace the cam roller bearings and the latches that held the arms in place would frequently break as well as the springs that held them in. I used it one season and traded on a 17' tedder best thing I ever done. I will say though it did rake a nice windrow. I think the hay actually dried better than with the 256 hay rake.

RodinNS has about the same comments on his NH254. I went to look at it and he says he puts a lot of money into it.

I'm in the same boat, need a rake and tedder. can't spend too much. Rotary rake alone is big dollars, and you don't find those cheap turkish tedders up here no sir.

Dern.... you done gone stole my thunder.....
That about sums up the NH. They do a nice job of raking, tedder is effective, but slow (~10'), and they cost a fortune in maintenance. Farmertee, unfortunately, is just getting started on his overhaul program, whether he knows it yet or not.... The worst part with that 254 was that you could rebuild it, top to bottom, and it still wasn't reliable.

I gotta ask a question! The folks that have problems with the 254, what speed are they running the pto? I bought one used over 10 years ago and it's been trouble free. I replaced the rake teeth once and that's it.

I've seen one that flew all to heck. The guy that owned it was running the pto at 540. The 254 wasn't designed for 540. I run mine with engine rpm's at 1150-1200. Just wondering why so many have problems with this rake.

This one was always run well below 540. Probably under 400 rpm. It covered over 200-300 acres a year, and did most of it's work at about 5 mph. That was tedding and raking most of that acerage too.... I think it's a poor design that requires a machine like that to be operated a touch above idle to hold it together. The Kuhn rake I'm using now works nice anywhere in the 5-8 mph range, and it's not nearly as rough with the walking tandems under it. The biggest downside to that rake is it's shear weight. It's all my 3930 can do to carry it.
As far as I'm concerned, the 254 was a maintenance nightmare. Period.

Same thing for me. I have a NH254. I have only replaced rake teeth also. I also run mine about 1100 RPMs in 3rd gear. The only thing I have a problem with iis the grease fitting popping out, seems I lose one or two each summer.

How many acres are year for the people with good luck and the guys with bad luck?

How rough is the ground?

My fields I can barely stay on the tractor at 10 mph, 6 mph is pretty uncomfortable, 4 or so is just fine and thats what speed I bale at.

I run over about 70 acres per year. I know of two more that are going over about 180 acres per year.

I really can't see how you could run 10 mph with the 254 or even 8 mph. You can't turn the beaters that fast. I stay between 4 and 4.5 mph.

I've lost some grease fittings also. Guess it may be from vibration.

I can't ted or rake at that, I just mean thats how fast I can drive in my fields. Some people tell me about going 10 mph all the time and their fields are smooth so equipment doesn't get beat up.

I know the 254 and 255 isn't for every operation. Infact they only work good for a few. I like it because I'm a one man show here and the 254 allows me to rake hay in the mornings and bale in the afternoon. I can't do that with a reel type rake here. I can also get more hay in the roll with the 254. My baler has a small throat and fluffing of the hay suits it better than ropeing hay with the reel type.

Been looking at one made by Hesston. It's wider than the NH and have heard some good reports. It will ted also.
