IH 56 baler

lookin for some input on an ole 56 baler ,goin to pick one up in a day or 2, and know very little about them ,it looks really good and seems to be well cared for,any opinions good or bad are appreciated.

thanks for all of your input ,i really apprciate it,i have never run an IH baler but they must be good there are dozens of them running around here.i have got to go pickup a 430 also ,i just hated to see the old 56 go to scrap.again thank yall very much.

I have a little IH 27 and had a 46 when I was growing up and they put pressure on from the top and bottom not the side. We never had any bales that had rounded sides.

The 56 is a bigger baler, larger than the small balers but not as big as the NH bale. They kinda had their own size. I ran a couple different 56s that were wire tie and had motors. One a Wisconsin engine and the other an IH water cooled engine. Both were good heavy balers. In their day they worked great but were not of high capacity as the newer balers. If you could get the plunger knife adjusted right and keep it there they made a pretty decent bale. The ones I had did not make as nice a bale as the NH but would put out bales hour after hour, day after day. I was running one one evening when the plunger crank broke. It pushed the sides of the baler out like a pregnant cow. We took it all apart and straightened it out but never got all of the wiggle out of the front. I think they are a good baler. The 55 seemed to make a tighter bale because the chamber was longer but did not have the capacity of the 56 or later 57. Good luck with it.

No one "told" me this. I"ve experienced it first hand by loading many bales on wagons behind balers. The IH puts pressure on the hay from the sides and causes rounded corners on the bales which makes it much easier for twines to be pulled off as the bales are handled. The NH and JD put pressure on the hay from top and bottom BETWEEN the twines so the corners are nice and square and twines stay where they are supposed to be. This means a handler deosn"t have to be nearly as careful.
As I mentioned before, look closely at this process on these balers and it becomes as clear as a bell which balers are superior.

55 50 that may be true I dont know about the older ones the two I have had a 47 and I have a a 430 all twine now and it does do a good job, I also have a 276 New Holland and it is a good baler. I have no trouble with rounded corners on bales from either. I had a 530 Ford that was slow but it made a better bale than either of the other two.

IH balers don"t tie good bales. Compare their way of putting compression on the hay to the way a New Holland or John Deere baler puts compression on and it"s a no-brainer. NH and JD win hands down!!!

I don't think you know what you are talking about. Matter of fact I know you dont. IH balers clear back through the 46/56 series use a rail in the top center to hold pressure on the bale chamber. The plunger dogs are on the side. Soft sholdered bales on an IH baler are caused by not feeding hay into the baler fast enough. I have never had the problem that you are refering to.
