Have a JD 535 round baler that has a leaking hydraulic pump. Anyone have any experience working on this pump ( looks like a power steering pump). The tie arms will not move, I suppose the is a problem with the pump as it leaks badly.

I was of the opinion the pump is a power stering pump from a Dodge-Plymouth car.

It is a power steering pump, but would order and install the one from Mother Deere as the gpm maybe too high for a regular pump. Was the dipstick okay or is it melted and gone? If gone, the pump was not relatching after dumping a bale. It then runs all the time over relief and gets so hot it melts the dipstick, goes in the oil and ruins the pump.

The dip stick did not melt, but the pump got very hot on several occasions. The pump leaks fluid badly, it would have to be refilled several times the last time we baled. Now, the time arms will not move at all.

The pump is not relatching when the bale is discharged and the gate is lowered. You need to make sure all the springs are in location and it relatches and the belt is loose. The pump should not be turning while baling. Look in your OM.

If you are trying to put on a lot of twine and there is not much time between bales, this can cause the pump to heat as well.

Hopefully you have not contaminated all the hydraulic circuit, but you may have to take it all apart and clean it.

Replace the pump.
