Please share your experiences. What is your recommendation and experience for fertilizing grass hay fields this time of year. I'm in the Bluegrass region of KY. Some fields are a mixture of blue, fescue, orchard and timothy. One is pure timothy. Interested in rate,timing and yields. Results vs. cost. How did you apply it? Many thanks.

I grow orchardgrass and timothy. I use 40-0-0-6 @ 200 lbs/ac. most of the time. Last season a local fertilizer plant made up a 33-0-0-12 which worked great. I had to cut my rate to 150 lbs/ac due to nitrogen costs. I also started using a split application. 100 lbs/ac in late April and 50 lbs/ac in late May early June. Late season here. I think I get better use of my nitrogen this way. Nitrogen equals yield, how much can you sell your hay for?

Soil Test!

Once you know your PH you will understand best what needs to be put on your fields.

Just remember the agricultural and pelletized lime needs 6 months to a year before they start to react in the soil and change your soil PH. Hydrated or burnt lime will react immediately and change the soil PH. 500 Lbs of burnt lime will have the same immediate effect as 2000 Lbs of agricultural lime will over a 2 year period.

For hay fields with a good PH 300 Lbs per acre of 19-19-19 works fine in the TN-KY area. For pasture 250 Lbs per acre of 12-24-24 works fine. Your soil test will give you the exact answer. Using ammonium nitrate leaches the lime out of the soil quickly.

I wont even consider messing around without a soil test. In central Kentucky phosphate can be all over the board from so high the soil can be legally sold as fertilizer (tests about a 0-1 to 2-0) to very low. Potassium is generally medium to low but that has huge influence on grass yields. With 2 farms, 8 miles apart I have those kinds of ranges.

Generally, based on soil test my potash needs run from 100 to 200 pounds actual K. Phosphate needs generally 0-50 pounds per acre up to 100 pounds per acre in the Salt River water shed. Nitrogen is a straight Univ of KY recommendation of 100 pounds actual N per acre on grass hay.

Most of my straight grass fields call for 300# ammonium nitrate and 200# muriate of potash. Typically, I back the N rate off to 200-250 ammoinum nitrate to cut down on lodging since I cut a bit later than recommended. My clover/grass fields normally call for around 100 pounds diammonium phosphate per acre and 200 pounds muriate of potash, a few call for twice that much muriate. Alfalfa fields run all over the board.

I'm with TomH. At today's prices, you can no longer afford to guess. Contact your county extension service and they should be able to connect you with a soils lab. Around here, soil tests run about $5 per sample. It will show exactly what is needed and when it should be applied.

You will find that it is money very well spent.

This is what I did last year.I took a soil sample to the fertilizer dealer. He sent it to a lab in Va. The lab tested for Ph,N,P and K. They made a recamendation on how much to put on per acre. I did what they recamended.I put the fertilizer on the field around mid May.I had to wait for the ground to dry out enouph so I would not leave ruts in the field.I got more then enouph extra hay to pay for the fertilizer on the hay field and the fertilizer on the field of beans. The PH needs to be between 6.5-7.0.If the PH is under 6.5 lime is needed to rase the PH. As for the cost of the siol test. $8.50 per sample. It is a well spent $8.50

I'm in central Ky also. Last year I went to Southern States and the gave me an 18-18-18 mix. I put about 100-150 lbs per acre. We had a real good year with our orchard grass. The fescue did better than usual also. Going to do it again soon. You could also use a 10-10-10 which is what i usually use but the other was about the same price per ton. Hope this helps. tim
