I have a IH-430 wire baler, but haven't got it going yet. I got both Operator and Parts Manuals for my 430 and maybe for 440, would have to check. 3010jd has given you some very good guidance. Tom

Not many IH lovers on this board. I have had IH balers and have a 440 all twine now. Never had a wire baler. You need to have a manual and it takes some learning. Seems they all have some querks. Having said that I would check the plunger for slop. Bearings and the slides the plunger runs on, also the knives and adjustment. Knives need to be sharp and in proper adjustment, thats where the manual comes in. if the baler was stored inside and used last year thats a plus. See if you can operate it. If you know the farmer and how he maintanes his equip. thats a plus. Some parts may not be avalible anymore,440s were newer so not sure. have heard wire prices have doubled last couple years. I paid 750 for my 440 with a thrower two years ago. Had to put some work into it but I been using IH balers since I was a kid and knew the farmer that had it. my .02.
